Rescue Me: Season 1

Powerful, beauutiful, haunting. One of the best series ever.
This was the perfectly done, first episode of Rescue Me, one of the best series ever. Denis Leary made this show. He was brilliant in his portrayal of alcoholic veteran firefighter Tommy Gavin. Leary's writing, his riveting screen presence and award-winning performance . puts this show up there with one of the all-time greats on TV.

This fireman can save me any day!
When Emmy nominations came out, the only thing I knew for certain is that Denis Leary was robbed! No one on television could beat his performance in Rescue Me. His pathos is obvious, but his performance is so good that you see the heart of the character shine through it all. I seldom find humor in most comedies. This is a drama that makes me laugh out loud in each episode. The characters remind us of the flawed human beings we all know and love. It's a show not afraid to take chances, with enough character to tackle even the most sensitive subjects with humor and humanity. The entire cast fits together in a way that defines what most of us are looking for in life -- family! And they're as dysfunctional as are most families. Season One makes me hope this show is around for years to come.

Excellent show, but not for the faint-hearted...
After missing the first few seasons on cable, we finally saw an episode from Season 3, and we found it very compelling. So we bought the first season on DVD so we could catch up. We like the show very much; however, it does get a little graphic and vulgar at times. And the Denis Leary character is hard to like, unless you are pre-disposed to like his work (such as his unfairly canceled cop show "The Job" from a few years back). However, if you like shows that are a little rough around the edges (like the Sopranos, for instance), I think you would like this one.

He's a Walking Contradiction - Partly Truth & Partly Fiction
Takin' every wrong direction (thx Kris) - Tommy Gavin in a nutshell. A man who doesn't smoke or drink or get into fist fights is not to be trusted - Tommy is to be trusted big time. A fearless firefighter & a fearless human being. True, Tommy's a hound dog, but he doesn't do all the chasing. He has his faults, but not a mean bone in his body. Tommy Gavin's emotions are right on the surface & what makes him tick. Don't get me wrong - he can be ever so charming & is relentless in pursuit of getting his wife/kids back. Blond hair always falling in those blue eyes doesn't hurt either...

The BEST!
We have all 13 episodes on vhs and dvd and STILL I am buying this DVD that's just come out. My husband and I have watched Rescue ME over and over again and I think he has it memorized by now. We've been dying to see what the second series will bring, just can not wait! Denis Leary has brought comedy and drama together so well. We cried, we laughed and went into deep thought over this show. We've always had respect for the firemen/woman in the past, but Rescue Me has caused us to respect them even more now. It's really made me stop and think.Good job Denis leary! We will never forget!

Great show
Love this show. Not family friendly, lots of adult content. Very funny.

Superb
The finest, most original piece of television in the last decade. I have watched every season and the standard is consistenly high throughout.Plot lines cover many difficult issues (homophobia/bi-sexuality, bulimia, mental illness, alcoholism, death, adultery, even marital rape) and never shies away or skirts the issue, without setting out solely to shock. It is, however, the dialogue that makes this program for me; in particular the banter between the characters in the firehouse has me in stitches on more than one occasion; it is very "real" and anyone who has worked in this kind of environment will recognise the authenticity of these scenes.Equally, some scenes have had me wiping away a tear.It stands up to repeat viewings, and with strong performances from all the cast, I cannot recommend this (and all the other seasons) enough.

Bloody brilliant
This is easily one of the best tv shows ever made! Denis Leary is a genious and his character is a crude, offensive, sexist, alcoholic womaniser....I bloody love him! It is a serious show but is hilarious at the same time, anyone who hasn't watched this MUST BUY IT!!!!Be warned though, you can buy series 1-4 on any region dvd but series 5 onwards is only available on region 1 (USA). Once you start watching you will become addicted so if you haven't already got one then you will end up paying for a multi-region dvd player......or its available on Netflix! ;o)

Worth a watch
Dennis Leary, stars in RESCUE ME, playing fire fighter Tommy Gavin. Set after the events of 9/11 he still he is haunted by those events and by his cousin Jimmy and others who died on 9/11. He also has to deal with the seperation from his wife Janet played by the lovely, Andrea Roth, who only lives across the street, with his three kids, who get caught up in the daily events of having seperated parents. Tommy's fellow firefighters on his watch, Ladder 62 include the gambling Chief Jerry Reilly,Jack McGee, a rather light headed Sean Garrity,Steven Pasquale. The Puerto Rican ladies man Franco Rivera,Daniel Sunjata and the "newbie mike" Mike Silletti,Mike Lombardi, who is pranked on constntly being the new guy. This show delivers the highs and lows of life in the NYFD, and Dennis Leary gives an award winning performance through outI love this series and would recommend to anyone

Funny stuff
I was looking for something new to watch and saw lots of good reviews of this so decided to give it a shot. I'm glad I did as I've enjoyed every episode. The humour is often laddish but is wittily done with a refreshing two fingers up to the pc police - something like the attitude taken in House and Life on Mars. There is also a wide range of well acted and entertaining 'characters' , meaning the show doesn't rely on the lead alone. Each episode can stand on its own but there is also an overarching storyline and character development which give the show more meat. An added bonus is how cheap it is, making for great value for money, and it is always great to discover a show several seasons in so you don't have to wait around for the next dose of comedy juice.

Not sure
This feels a little forced to me. In not sure I believe in the characters and the script, whilst sharp, is a bit too clever for its own good. The writing follows a formula it seems which goes a bit like this; dialogue, dialogue, wisecrack end of exchange cut to next scene. It's not bad tho, it just feels like its trying too hard and moving to fast
