A must have for successful hunts
The Garrett AT Pro is the probably the best metal detector I have ever used. I used it on two hunts today with fantastic results. I have yet to use it for a water search, but since it can be used underwater with the special water proof headset, I can't wait. It is very lightweight and easy to use too, you won't get fatigued using this detector. This detector is for beginners and for seasoned old veterans, it has something for everyone. I suggest you read the instruction booklet thoroughly, then watch all the videos you can on the use of this machine, then go out and try out what you learned. Learn the machine forwards and backwards. You will thank me later.

This Is The One!!
This is simply a great detector!! And the Spring Sports Pack Special is just icing on the cake.I wasn't sure when I initially considered buying this detector whether I needed the Sports Pack Special, but then figured at some point I would probably want the smaller 5x8 coil. The sports pack is the better deal, if you add up all the extra items individually. After trying out both the larger and smaller coils that come in the package, its clear there are practical applications for each. I've found the smaller coil to be extremely helpful in minimizing the number of "trash" targets in high-trash areas, while the larger is useful for covering more territory faster, in less trashy areas. If you're riding the fence on getting just the detector or the Sports Pack - go for the Sports Pack. Its worth the extra $85. Just the 5x8 coil alone is over $100 if you buy it by itself.Onto the machine itself.....its awesome.....and its complex/robust. Garrett videos and the user manual both say you're going to need about 100 hours on the machine before you really understand it and have a good comfort level with it. I completely agree - there's a lot of functionality to this machine. Having said that, I was able to take it out 20 minutes after receiving and assembling it and found a ring in my front yard! The same front yard I've been over bunches of times with my old detector. On that note.....I've had it 2 weeks now, and been out 5 times. The 5 places I've gone to, I've already been with my old detector this year. There was a tagline I read - maybe on the Garrett Site - "makes hunted out places like new again" or something to that effect. That is no exaggeration! In one park I hit the other night, I covered the exact same spots as I did earlier this spring and found a necklace, a pendant, 2 keys, 2 quarters, 7 dimes, 2 nickels, and 24 pennies. Maybe 3 or 4 of the coins were targets that were lost between the last time I was there and the most recent - based on their depths - but everything else was deep and had been there awhile. The difference was this detector!Another significant feature of this detector is that it is completely waterproof. I was itching to tap some local beaches, but hemmed and hawed too long before I pulled the trigger to buy it. I live in MN so this time of year isn't exactly conducive to hopping into a lake or river, but I intend on getting wet next summer. It should be clear by now that I'm "all in" with the Garrett AT Pro. But to be objective, there were a couple things worthy of mention:- its a little more complex than I anticipated. They make it look so easy on all the YouTube vids....and it probably is for those users. You just need to have the patience and time on it to learn the machine. My first real outing with it I was getting frustrated with all the trash I was pulling up, likely from a lack of understanding the sounds and the numeric metal identifier. Every outing gets a little better and I'm digging less trash, however.- A lot of other reviewers have mentioned the same.....but the "proprietary" headphone jack is a little annoying. I think I get why they do it - for waterproofing purposes - but it would be nice to be able to use standard-ended headphones of my choice. And its kind of a pain in the @ss to plug in the Garrett headphones. So in summary - this is a really terrific metal detector that lives up to its hype, and the Spring Sports Pack Special sweetens the deal!

AT PRO or AT GOLD
I was wavering between the AT Pro and the AT Gold. I ultimately decided on this pack because it includes both coils that come with the Pro and Gold. The smaller coil enables the machine to find those tiny items like small nuggets if desired. The larger coil covers more ground to help the user find larger items like coins. This combo pack gives you options. The ability to use the detector in any type of water, salt or fresh, gives it an edge. This is a versatile detector that can be used in standard mode for beginners and pro mode for the experienced users. This combo pack makes makes it a great overall detector for coins, nuggets, relics, and more!

Ready to go, simple setup, but many extra features
I've had a Bounty Hunter 505 Pioneer for years, but have used it little since I didn't understand how to set and evaluate it to work around all the iron scrap in my farmyard. The AT Pro with the 5x8" DD coil easily solved the bulk of that problem. It arrived with batteries installed, Ready to go after one hand bolt/nut to attach the desired coil. ( mine came with two coils.)The unit is very light, so easy for an old guy to cart around all day. Also, I was amazed at the high sensitivity and depth. On my first day, I even found (with a faint signal) some mineralized fossil bone. The earphones, which are extremely heavily built, have separate R and L volume controls which is great since my ears hear differently. The coil cord is twice the thickness of my old Bounty Hunter unit. The online and included DVD videos showed how to set it up, but the unit has several factory settings that you can just toggle through and get started detecting without knowing the details of all the options. The Ground balance works well to tune out mineralized soil, water use, and power line interference. So far I've found something in every spot the unit signaled.

Best one hands down!
Hands down the best detector I've owned yet. This detector is very accurate when coinshooting. I've gone to very trashy places and you can tell when there is a coin under the ground. I've picked up wheat pennies at about 5-6 inches quarters at about 8-9. The best part is that my percentage of digging up trash has decreased very much compared to the Ace 250 I passed on to my kid. I like to use the pro feature which makes it easier to pick only the good stuff. As promised by the advertising it does in fact bring life back into hunted out locations.

AT Pro FTL!
I stepped up from a Tesoro Cibola beep and dig machine to this. Fantastic detector, it has same sensitivity as the Cibola, with the added benefit of multi-tone audio + manual / Semi-auto ground balance. I run Pro Zero most of the time. The Cibola was a penny magnet, the Garrett is a quarter magnet.I would not recommend this machine for a beginner. Rather, I would suggest someone new to the hobby to start out with a Tesoro Compadre to learn the subtle differences of sound.
