Kinky-Curly, Original Curling Custard, Natural Styling Gel, 8 oz

This gel is SO good--it's light, keeps my hair healthy looking, and because the ingredients are natural, I feel totally comfortable using it constantly. I use it every single time I wash my hair!

Wow, I purchased this item about 7 months ago and I am just now beginning to think about a repurchase (I still have approximately a quarter of a pot left). Kinky Curly Curling Custard is a great product if: you have curly, preferably thick hair. It is probably too heavy if you have looser waves. It coats the hair and helps curl formation last for dayyyys, like no other curl cream I have tried. Personally I require a small amount of gel over the top of this, because my hair is super frizzy/will lose its curl if I don't. People who don't lose their curl formation might be ok without gel. I also put a light leave in conditioner under it, the Kinky Curly Knot Today one does work reliably well but I also find it works fine with most things. This product has a fairly strong vanilla smell and is the consitency of, forgive me, snot. You need to make sure you distribute it evenly, I just rake it through wet hair, otherwise it can clump a bit. Personally it has never flaked on me. It does "stretch" the hair a bit, and takes forever to dry naturally, or even with a diffuser. But it's worth it.

Very quick delivery by supplier . Love the smell of this product have used only 3 times but I'm finding flax seed gel works better . Maybe I need to use this with the knot today conditioner to get better results . But bit wary about ordering because it's so expensive. Going to try again but at the minute I've gone back to my homemade flaxseed gel will update if I get better results with different products. Review update I've found a way to make the custard work and if anyone else is not getting results with it try it it's called smashers technique. It really works as long as you only use about 2 pea size amounts. Achieved perfect spirals on type 2 hair that's last for 4 days. Look up the technique I promise you this is the best way to use kinky curly curling custard

New formula: it no longer works. This was my lifesaving product for low porosity curls. It locked in moisture and gave amazing curls. I bought a new tub in December 2025 and just opened it. It was obvious things had changed: the smell was gone and the texture was thinner and smoother. It does nothing to my hair, which is now drying too quickly and not forming ringlets anymore. Instead it’s limp and dull. I’m gutted as I’ve used this products for so many years and it’s been the best I’ve ever found. Time to look for an alternative.

This is a great product, but you need to try different application techniques before you find what works best for your hair. For me, I apply it with very wet hands right after Cantu Sea Butter Curl Activator - and scrunch it in. The smell is divine, and you need smaller amounts than you would need if you used a gel - so it lasts for a long time, which offsets the price. The only significant problem is that it can easily build into the "too much of a good thing" territory. So I suggest you apply repeatedly in small amounts till you get it just right. Do not be discouraged if it doesn't work the first time, the trick is all in finding the right amount for your hair type.

I have been on the curly girl method for over a year now, trying to figure out my thick, wavy, frizzy hair. Normally any curly product I’ve tried makes my hair heavy, crunchy and my waves are sad and puffy. I know this product has been in the market for a long time but somehow I thought it was only good for really tight coiled curls. Well. I now have big bouncy, shiny, frizz free, very defined curls and I’m never going back to anything else. I apply this after showering when my hair is really wet. It does feel crunchy and looks wet at first, but after gently diffusing, I crunch the crunch with a little oil and the crunchy and wet feeling go away. If you have hair similar to mine and you live in a humid place, then the one thing I learned is that you must avoid glycerin in all your products- read your labels!

I’ve been using this product for years, but the pot I recently purchased has got a different texture and does not work as well?? It’s normally more of a slimy texture and holds well when I want to slick my hair back in a pony tail, but this one is more of a gel texture and does not hold as well as the normal formula, so I don’t know what is going on as it does not say “new formula”? If it a broke, why fix it?

My wife has very long curly hair, this product helps her manage it and makes it shine.

The best product for styling curly hair.

I have purchased this hair product several times. I use other hair products too but this one is a favorite because of the way it allows my curls to hang out in their curl families with minimal effort from me. I use it after washing and conditioning and I am still in the shower with saturated hair. It scrunch it in and continue scrunching with my head flipped forward. Then I closely wrap my hair up and go about my normal routine for a few minutes. Then I unwrap and let my curls fall and continue to scrunch up until I am satisfied. The next day I can spritz my hair with water until dampened and then rescrunch since the product is still good again when moistened.
