what are the main health benefits of using vitamin d?

Depends on the individual and location. In the British isles we don't get enough from sunlight hence the need for a supplement. In my case it helps reduce inflammation in my spine 4 damaged discs by helping to absorb Magnesium. Vitamin D also plays a role in preventing osteoporosis . It plays other roles in the gut but this is my main reason for taking it. By helping to absorb magnesium and other elements it helps regulate blood pressure. BTW a handful of cashews daily gives all the magnesium you need ONCE your vitamin D level is correct but won't be absorbed without it.

Does this work to deal with vit d deficiency

I believe so I was on Vitamin D tablets from my doctor and these are not as strong but strong enough, I feel good about taking them

I opened the tub and they have a strange smell. Is this normal?

Not really. I've just smelt my container. There is a slight oily smell. Probably from the gym capsules.
