Best double edge razor for beginners and experts alike
Absolutely brilliant double edged razor. If you were wondering whether to change from cartridge razors to a double edged, then this is the one for you. Perfect for both beginners and experts, this gives a close comfortable shave. The razor is very well manufactured, with a good finish and well balanced. It is perfect in terms of closeness - not too aggressive and yet close enough, and importantly very comfortable. I've tried a few double edged razors, but this is my go-to razor most days. Some aggressive ones are fine with a few days growth, but this is perfect for daily use. There are many benefits of double edged razors over cartridges. They are much cheaper in the long run. They are also better for the skin as the way cartridge razors work is that they grab the hair with one blade which lifts it, and then the next blade cuts it below the surface of the skin - this means the hair has to push up through the skin when growing, which gives rise to irritation and/or spots. Double edged razors cut the top off, and leaves the skin in much better shape. Also, typically you do a maximum of 3 passes, as opposed to a cartridge with 5 blades which is effectively doing 5 passes, if not more. I mean seriously - 5 blades! Why stop there; why not 6 or 7 or more? Getting silly, and double edged razors were good enough for your ancestors, and importantly they work very well. Yes, there is a learning curve, but get on YouTube and watch a couple of the popular videos, and you will be shaving like a pro in a week. It also becomes a pleasurable experience and a great zen way to start the day. Go the whole experience and get yourself a shaving brush and some decent shaving soap. The aficionados will talk about badger or boar brushes, but it doesn't matter too much and I use a synthetic brush, which is easier to take of and lasts practically forever (make sure to rinse properly as leaving soap on it shortens the life). Shaving soaps - go for a soft cream with a nice fragrance (pick a popular one on Amazon), and you can't go too wrong. Again, much better for your skin than the aerosols/cans. Round it off with an alum block. Then you're all set and it will all last you a long time for a small upfront investment. And importantly, you will enjoy the shaving experience and your skin will thank you for it.

Excellent item.
Just used this beauty for the first time having been using a vintage Gillette Tech Fat Handle, which, itself, was a treat to use. By comparison it's a beast. Substantially longer and heavier and with a fatter handle. The knurling on the handle is fine but not as deep and grippy as the Gillette but doesn't present a problem at all. Obviously it's beautifully finished and engineered. As a relative newbie in double edge shaving I can't say as I notice a vast difference between the two but, for sure, I got a soft and sharp shave and will treasure this thing. Muhle make the heads for Edwin Jagger apparently so bear that in mind when deciding between Jagger, Merkur and Muhle. Lots on info. on the shaving forums....search and see. EDIT. A couple of days on and I'm getting more accustomed to shaving with the Muhle. Additionally I'm learning how to use it without drawing blood...take it really gently and no excessive pressure, get the preparation right (ie. hot water, pre-shave oil, face wash, decent shaving cream or soap). It's giving a cracking shave every time. Currently using a 'Gillette Rubie' blade, now on it's third day. To date I've used an 'Astra' blade and a 'Wilkinson Sword'...both were fine and the 'Rubie' is as good if not even better. In addition to the ones mentioned I've bought 'Polsilver Super Iridiums', 'Gillette Yellow 7 o,clock's and 'Personna Double Edge Stainless Comfort Coated'. Haven't gone for the 'Feather's...don't want to risk spoiling the exercise by going for the sharpest and most expensive of them all and getting disappointed. Hope to get a week out of a blade...seem to be on course for achieving that. Further EDIT. 21st Jan 15. Have now also purchased a Muhle R41 head to use with the existing handle which accompanied original item. For sure the R41 is very noticeably more aggressive. Far more blade exposed and far easier to draw blood. By comparison the R89 is a kitten. To be honest it probably wasn't a necessary purchaser - having read so much about them I just had to buy one to get it out of my system. UPDATE RE THE HANDLE. I found the standard handle to be a bit more slippery than I was hoping for when wet/soapy. The answer for me was to buy some textured heat shrink tubing from 'Hilltop Products'in Warrington. You need the "20mm Textured" (I used the black) and it comes in metre or half metre lengths. It slides over the handle (cut it oversized and trim afterwards) and just heat it up with a heat gun. I used some clear mastic on the handle before sliding the tubing on in order to get it to grip permanently and to seal it against any possible water ingress over time. It works perfectly - much grippier and the extra width is a bonus too. Further update 25th Jan 15. Have now taken delivery of a Braveheart Open Comb razor (head only for £15 plus P and P) from a specialist shaving supplier online. In truth the Braveheart might well be even better than the R89 and the R41...insofar as it's part-way between the two. Definitely not as tricky to use (aggressive?) as the R41 - but definitely closer than the R89. Definitely not as well made as the Muhles though...not as well engineered or plated. The Braveheart used in conjunction with the Grande handle (the long one), which I've modded with the heat shrink, is probably the best combination I've come up with for my own purposes. Hopefully anyone reading this might be able to draw their own conclusions with just a little more info. to go on. Have only used it with the Gillette 7 o/clock Yellow to date...but, as I say, it all worked beautifully well.

Muhle R41 Grande Open Comb Razor - Excellent!
This is a review of the Muhle R41 Grande. After 30 years of spending far too much money on wet shaving with expensive multi-blade razors that clog after two days, I decided to look at using a traditional DE razor. After looking around various internet reviews I decided to go with the R41 Grande, even though everyone indicated that, as a new DE user, I really should avoid the R41 razors. The R41 seems to have a cult following. This Amazon one is the 2013 version 2 (Version 1 was made in 2011 and was judged to be over aggressive so was modified by Muhle). Even with the version 2, everyone calls it "the beast" or "an angry cobra" as it's meant to be a very aggressive open comb razor. However, I need to shave every day and my stubble is pretty coarse, so I thought "well, eventually I will need a razor such as the R41, so why not start with what I hope will be my final razor." So I ignored all the advice and bought this. Well, I have no regrets at all. On my first ever DE shave using the R41 I received no nicks or cuts at all, even though I have sensitive skin. And so, so smooth, with no rash or problems. All with only one pass (or two in those hard to reach areas). The key seems to be letting the weight of the razor do the work; just gently pull it over your skin, at the correct angle (which seemed to be pretty easy) allowing the weight of the razor to do all the work, and you are done! And it only took a minute more to shave compared with my old multi-blade razor. Over time I expect to be able to shave in the same time as my old multi-blade razor. I used the razor with an Arko shaving stick (just rubbed it on my skin and hand lathered), with no brush and Astra Platinum blades. To be clear, if you start shaving with the R41 in a cavalier way, I am sure this will cut you to pieces (and it may if you have light growth or different skin to me), and plastic surgery may then be in order, but if you take your time, you will love this razor. And it's great fun as well. Also, as this is an open comb razor, there is no hair clogging at all, and the shaving cream stays on the skin better (closed combs tend to scrape the cream off, so I am told). Quality wise, I expect this to last many years. It's beautifully made (a work of art, really) and the chrome is smooth and really high quality. The longer handle (on the Grande version) suits me well (I only have medium-sized hands), and is nice and grippy, and adds the natural weight needed, so I recommend this version as it is very easy to control. I can't imagine any other shaver giving you a closer shave than this. Worth every penny. Now, I need a brush and holder. To be honest, even though the initial outlays are high for a good DE razor and brush (which is actually optional), you will get your money back in a year or two compared with multi-blade shaving. I can fully understand why DE shaving is making a comeback again.

Very good razor
So i went from a slant razor mekur slant 37c to this. That razor did everything better for me but one thing the fact it broke with use m3wnt i lost faith in that brand. the way to tighten it wore out this shows no signs of same issue. So i went for this as everything said its a close shave and does it well. So i can confirm the great thing about this razor its incredible close one of best I believe but can with such power means easier to make oneself bleed. It's amazing with a decent blade I use astra platinum It's weight is good and stable the negative, on this product changing blades is ok but take slow easy to cut yourself and I always feel like changing the blade I'm waiting for myself to get it wrong.

Brilliant!
Decided to try a double edged razor after long-term use of Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 (which I’ve used for ages and am super impressed with). Tried DE partly because I’ve seen so many positive reviews I thought I was missing out, and partly because the razors look really cool! Approached this with some trepidation, and expected at least a couple of nicks and cuts. I was genuinely stunned that I didn’t get any - just a very smooth shave. First try wasn’t as close as the Hydro 5, but very close to it. As technique and confidence are improving, it’s getting better and better. Razor itself is incredibly well made and high quality. Points to note: Do watch a video on how to use them properly. Technique is a bit different - shorter strokes, less pressure - letting the weight of the razor do the work. I used Astra blades which seem terrific. Expect the process to take a bit longer than a cartridge - but more involving and enjoyable. I’ll keep using the Hydro 5 occasionally, especially when in a hurry, but this is really great, and very cheap for an incredibly high quality razor. Highly recommended.

Upgrade, and what a razor.
When I got this, I thought it was just for a better, nicer looking razor to have a nice set. Pleased to say it definitely helps round the all good experience and improved shave and I get the idea of the razor head weight. For beginners like me looking to convert: I used to dread shaving as got thick'ish beard and sensitive skin and after looking into DE (double edge) shaving with its acclaims and thought it was worth a go. So having just converted to DE, I like it a lot! Its actually a good experience shaving now! Wanting to ditch the Gillette fusion, I started with a supermarket bought cheap Wilkinson's razor and brush(which I already had). My first time (still using Gillette's gel) I looked like a 'victim'. Second time I used a Palmolive soap stick and it was a far better experience and shave. I used the soap stick straight on face and brushed on to create lather but the lather can equally be done on a bow, just happens at the time I didn't have one. Still the result was so good that using a stick, I'd probably still put it on face straight. The soap stick at < £1 at Tesco of Lloyds pharmacy thrashes the gel no end (and will last and last) and see why people refer to gels as gunk! Really is. As I liked it I upgraded the whole set thinking i'd improve the shave somewhat. Got Taylor of old bond (TOBS) shaving cream (£10), TOBS after balm (£12), a stand with bowl (£24), 100 derby (£9) + also subsequently got 100 astra blades (£10) (rated better but I can't confirm yet), a TOBS pure badger brush (20) and this new razor (£25) after quite a bit of research. The lathering is now a nice experience. And what an upgrade its been. I also got an alum block (for 2 on the big auction site for £5 delivered) and any little nicks disappear - applied with moist face, run block under water and rub on face as you would with a soap all over and wash off after a minute. Magic, no blood, nothing and its great knowing its an antiseptic too! You get a tingle as feedback where most damage has been done. If you want to talk about it as an investment, price-wise, yes it was quite an initial investment to convert to DE and have a decent kit. On return I got good tools that will be of service for years and enough blades for 2 years (per 100 blades at the rate of 1 blade a week). So on the long run it will pay for itself over the next 3 years and then it will be major savings from then on. Now, the shave I get.. well that is so superior. UPDATE(30 May 2015) Still 100% DE, over the past 2 years. Still behind it 100%. It was a great choice. And this razor also a great option and is still going strong.

Great item
Review title says it all, really! I'd been reading about DE shaving for a while and the Muhle r89 kept cropping up in forum threads as one of the best beginners' DE razors on the market, so when I finally decided to ditch the cartridges and get a shaving kit together this was the winner. Well, after a few shaves all I can say is that I wish I'd known about this much earlier - I'd have spared myself years of razor rash and ingrown hairs for sure, and possibly saved quite a few bob on cartridges. The razor looks uber-sleek in an old-fashioned sort of way, weighs nicely in the hand and the mirror-polished chrome finish is a pleasure to look at; cuts an impressive figure (no pun intended) in the bathroom and feels like it's going to last for years. It also looks fearfully sharp with the blade it comes with, but ll in all it's much more gentle than I'd have expected. Even an absolute beginner like me managed a smooth, rather effortless first shave with just one pass with the grain, no irritation whatsoever and no nicks - not even on my bulging Adam's apple, where I would ALWAYS get nicks and cuts with any cartridge razor I've used. I have a goatee and being able to actually see the edge of the blade also means that it's a lot easier to shape the edges of any existing facial hair. Plus, I've found that the whole ritual of wet shaving is quite fun - a great way to start the day with boatloads of confidence or to unwind at the end of a hard day's work. Well worthy of five stars and definitely recommended to anyone who wants to try this way of shaving.

High-quality razor (R41)
High-quality razor with a good balance. The R41 for me is a timeless razor. I have a really close shave each time. Be aware that this model isn't the old model of R41, which is known as Beast. I HOPE ONE DAY MUHLE STARTS TO SELL THE OLD R41 AGAIN.

Best razor I’ve ever owned. But be aware, it’s aggressive.
Excellent quality! Expensive but worth it in my opinion. Open Comb and aggressive stance lets you save even fairly long beard growth. Best combined with a more mild razor for everyday use but amazing when you want that super close shave. Constructed to last a lifetime.
