How many screws come in the screw starter pack?

Not a lot. IIRC there were 4 packs with I think 4 or 6 in each one. I have to order extra screws

Can I use screws from trend?

I buy mine from Westminster tools. So long as they’re pocket hole screws you should be fine. Don’t be tempted to use countersunk.

Ya. Everything you see is included in the box. It's a simple jig to use, also includes a mixture of screw types for immediate use.

Has anyone used it on its side, say if you had a very long piece of timber to pocket hole?

No, I don’t own one, but Apparently the drill block can be removed & used without the built in clamp (use a Different clamp Though). So yes it could be used as you intended as I understand it.
