MICROPOWER PS400 Phantom Power Supply

This is one of those pieces of kit that you desperately need when you need it, but when you don't you don't! It should be in every audio engineers / musicians tool box as sooner or later you will come across a piece of kit that doesn't have a phantom power supply Why!!!!! Or possibly a piece of equipment that has phantom supply but its either on/off for all channels Why!!!! You can then power the condenser mic through this and switch off the mixers internal phantom supply for those mic's that might be damaged by it. Overall its a great little piece of kit to have available with no discernible drop in quality.

Got this to power my condenser microphone when recording my dj sessions. This unit is a bit bigger than a pack of cigarettes. It’s very easy to connect. Works perfectly. My only gripe is that there is no on/off switch..you have to pull out the mains cable to turn it off. All in all, great compact unit.

The unit I bought was the Behringer PS400 Micropower Phantom Power Supply. It's a small unit that offers either 12v or 45v phantom power [switchable] It has XLR mic input and XLR mic thru [output] so you'll also need a short extra XLR -XLR cable to connect from the PS400 to the Xenyx 302 USB or other mixer... I bought a one foot cable. The PS400 will provide your condenser mic with the correct power at 45v and you'll notice a huge difference in audio quality. The Xenyx 302 can also be used with a standard dynamic microphone that requires no power and will also produce excellent quality. The XLR input on the Xenyx can also be used with a microphone cable that ends in a 1/4" jack so it's very versatile! The key thing when using the mic is to adjust the gain first on the Xenyx... try say about position 3 o'clock then keeping Low High and Pan in their middle postions position the mic adjustment knob at about 12 o'clock... finally adjust the Main Mix knob until you have sufficient mic output without the clipping lights coming on. This unit will provide the necessary phantom power for the Xenyx 302 USB which does say it has phantom power... that's true but it's really too low for most condenser mics at about 17v? The PS400 does the job really well and is well built.

Seems to work OK here, relatively small (so fits in my audio kitbag OK - I'm a journalist by trade) but well built and sturdy enough to be trusted on my travels. Performance is no worse than any I've used in the sub-£20 bracket and considerably better in terms of extraneous noise than some it has to be said. Overall, happy enough with it for the money - especially considering it has a three-year warranty to back it up.

The device itself is very nice. It's metal body is sturdy, doesn't flex and the ports and switches all feel good. The power cable doesn't go all the way in which is a bit unsettling but it never fell out over its limited usage. My only complaint is that it produces a very audible hiss on the mic which isn't present when I use it on a friends GoXLR, I did manage to remove this in software but it's irritating to say the least. If you need a phantom power this will do the job well enough but I don't recommend this for condenser mics that basically require a preamp to be audible. I used the AT2020 for reference

It worked on a akg c1000, but wouldn't power an akg p220, so I returned it

No problems here. It behaves as one would expect, has a metal enclosure and a power indicator LED. I bought this because I was experiencing issues with my CAD M179 following the replacement of my mixer with a MOTU Hybrid Lite; awful noise was present on the Mic, a cross between rumbling, fizzing and white noise and was over 30dB up on my studio noise, typical levels. It appears to be a common 'issue' (I won't call it a fault) with the M179. This phantom PSU cured those woes in one simple easy swipe. Adding a 1m XLR myself, it is small enough to mount on the mic stand with a short length of velcro or something similar and be unobtrusive. Very happy.

Très bonne alimentation phantom. Elle fonctionne très bien pour mon Shure filaire. Aucun son parasites.
