Glucogel and Dextrogel are the same. Both effective, short-term treatments for acute hypoglycaemia.
Glucogel and Dextrogel are the same. Both are effective, short-term treatments for acute hypoglycaemia. I am a registered nurse and I just want to clear that up. We use both at work, it just depends on which brand has been purchased. There is no difference. At home, I use this for management of acute hypoglycaemia in my Insulin dependent, diabetic cat! The vet will say use honey. That’s no use as it sets and crystallises. When you need this it is an emergency and it must be a liquid. Every second counts. You might try syrup, but that will make cats vomit, and you can’t get the blood glucose up when there is vomiting. So I began to use Glucogel-Dextrogel, just like we do on our wards. It works rapidly, it’s a thin liquid which is easy to administer and any which isn’t swallowed will be absorbed bucally. We keep an emergency stock now at home. You will need about two tubes per hypo episode. They have a long expiry date and do not need to be refrigerated.

The NHS Paramedics carry these around for their more critical cases of low blood sugar and having seen these gels at work they really do raise the blood sugar levels rapidly and avoiding the severe and life threatening issues that can come from dropping into the extremes of low blood sugar.I highly recommend these as a real emergency kit for those that are susceptible to extreme blood sugar drops and I recommend the Glucotabs - 50 Glucose Tablets (raspberry) 200g for the less extreme cases as they will do the job 99 times out of 100 for most people.

1 of the gels seals had broken, none of the gels where in the box, and the box was squished. Not amused I was 1 gel down, when I had paid fast delivery.

Peace of mind for diabetics
An excellent product that is so useful for my husband when he has an unexpected hypo while out. We make sure we always keep a tube to hand when travelling.

Essential for anyone who experiences hypos. Was able to leave one at my Mum's house to save her looking through my handbag while I lost consciousness and she panicked!

Different product was supplied
The product delivered was 'Dextrogel' not 'Glucogel'. Confusingly the main active ingredient of the former is 'glucose monohydrate' and of the latter it is 'dextrose monohydrate. If you want a treatment for hypoglycaemia then they both do the job - I did, so the substitute was acceptable. However, it would have been good to have an explanation/apology.
