Q: i am getting a golden retriever pup but want the cage to last when she is bigger. do i get a 42 inch or a 36 inch

I'd definitely go for the 42". We have an 11 month old sprocker and she has plenty of room to stand up and move around. She spends a lot of time in her cage when we are at work and she is really happy in there. We have a 36" for the car, it's big enough for travelling but I wouldn't leave her in there for any length of time during the day. Hope this helps.

They only need enough room for standing and turning at fully grown. If you have a puppy and only want to buy one crate,you can pad it out with a few boxes so that they have a small nest area. It is best not to let them toilet in the crate so let it out often . Research how big your dog is likely to get. Hope this helps as I bought a crate that is way too big for my dog at adult size.

Q: Is this suitable for an adult Jack Russell?

I agree with the previous three comments, this is quite a large cage with plenty of room for a Jack Russell terrier and his bedding. Our only complaint is the bolts on the doors do not line up very well making it difficult to close the doors securely. Make sure these fit OK when you take delivery.
