Does a great job and so easy to carry around
This is a really great camera to carry around with me.It takes photos in an easy and accessible way.It has a high res photo setting.Has Macro and automatic and manual and all the usual settings including a decent zoomI have had zero problems with it and am very happy. This is the cheapest in the Ixus range and I have also one that is of higher spec but it has become faulty after many years of use. I am happy now with this new one.

Great images for the price - great for travel
I wanted a simple camera, which I could take with me on travels where i don't want to be carrying around an expensive one, which might attract unwanted attention. The Canon Ixus 185 fits the bill perfectly - it is simple to use, has a useful 8 times zoom controlled from a little dial, and it can be carried easily in a jacket or jeans pocket. It is roughly credit card sized long and about the thickness of a finger. The images are really good and I have included a couple of photographs taken in different conditions to give examples of what it can do easily in different light conditions. For the price this is an excellent little camera -and i am delighted with it

Great purchase.
Great quality and picture quality for domestic use. I love to print my photos and keep my phone uncluttered.

Nice camera but price seems high
Seems to be a decent enough camera but seems a bit basic for the price. Also connectivity seems dated and cabling was difficult to find

Defo my choice of point and press
I use this in my job whilst offshore and I’ve had a few now to try. This is by far the best to use in my opinion. As long as you don’t kneel on it when open it’s tough enough. Great quality pics and easy to use.

Canon's new version of a great camera is definitely not an improvement.
I chose the IXUS 185 when my IXUS 132 failed after four years of highly satisfactory use. I thought I would be getting an updated version of the 132, maybe with some new features, but essentially the same efficient camera. The opposite is the case. They have got rid of some of the best functions and introduced new ones which are simply a nuisance. Switching from auto to manual now requires four on-screen steps to be actioned, instead of flicking a switch: cumbersome and time-consuming, and every time the camera is switched on, there is an on-screen message saying it is in auto mode. This obscures the monitor image and you either wait several seconds for it to disappear or you have to flick the zoom control: more time wasting. The space occupied by the auto switch has been taken by a button to activate "auto zooming for people", a facility I cannot see any need for, and which seems to be a solution looking for a problem. The multi-function central control has scrapped the macro selection in favour of an option to show the date and time on the photo, a facility which should be accessed via the menu, but being part of the main controls makes it easy to activate it by mistake. The video playback options no longer allow for editing and copying. The width and height of the 185 are slightly greater that the 132, and the shiny black surfaces give it a cheaper look than the 132's satin finish. This camera is a terrible disappointment. Canon seems to have decided to make changes for the sake of it, and the result is a camera that will serve my needs, but not with the versatility and excellence of its predecessor.

A smashing little camera
Quite a miracle of small scale technology... I wanted a point-and-shoot camera to supplement my bulkier SLR, now used mainly as a process camera and the IXUS does all that I could want. It takes some nice photographs too. It's well-made, easy to operate, goes in my pocket and uses a memory card that is almost universal. Don't waste money on anything cheaper!
