Yes, all the time, to get surface temperatures on grill or pans.

Does it measure temperature thru plastic film?

Yes, it does. As long as it's not "multi-layered" in plastic wrap. It does not read temps through glass. It's a great little tool!

Will it work for melting wax to get an accurate temperature?

I use it to keep tabs on my bees wax candles and it works very well. The temperature I use is 80C or, if you wish, 353 Kelvin.
