Works well for my shih tzu
I wanted a safer car harness for my shih tzu, Cooper, and the Sleepypod harness was recommended to me in a shih tzu group. I'm very uncoordinated but I was able to adjust the harness by myself and fit it on him. It was less tricky than some other harnesses I have tried. The first time I used it in the car, I was worried it wouldn't work for him, because he was stuck in a sitting pose and didn't seem able to lie down. But the second time I used it - and every time since then - he has been able to lie down without any problems. It seems like he just had to get used to it. He can easily go from a sitting to lying pose and back now. He seems relaxed and comfortable. I don't use it as his primary walking harness, but it does also work for that purpose.I would definitely recommend this harness, and I would say - if your dog seems uncomfortable at first, give them a chance to get used to it and to realise that actually yes, they can sit/lie down if they try.Note: my shih tzu is taller/larger than the breed standard for shih tzu; he is almost 19 lbs. But this harness isn't advised for dogs under 18 pounds, so you should check your dog's weight before purchasing!

Really like it as a car harness, not for regular use
I got this and had a really hard time adjusting it. I eventually did. I am not worried it will loosen up because of how hard it is to adjust. I like how my dog can lay down and sit up in the seat, and is sleek car device that is successfully crash tested. I was using it as her daily harness since my dog does in a car everyday because she goes to dog day care. The stiffness of the device which is needed probably to make it work as a car safety device rubs my dogs fur and skin, it is really irritated. I will use it in the car, just not outside of it.

My Elkhound loved this harness!
I very rarely leave reviews, but on this occasion I simply have to. Although I was doubting my decision to purchase the harness because of the price, after watching some scary testing films of other car harnesses, my opinion changed. You can't put a price on the safety of your beloved pet when travelling in a car. When the harness arrived and after inspecting it, I thought to myself how could a dog be comfortable strapped in with this thing, but I was wrong. My dog has never been so relaxed and stress free when travelling in a car before. No excessive panting, whining or flailing around. She seemed like a completely different dog, she even laid down and fell asleep. So instead of a stressed out Elkhound and a stressed out driver and passengers, we actually had a pleasant and calm journey.

Too stiff for small dogs and a waste of money
After looking around for a good crash-tested harness, I bought the the size S for a Westy. The size was Ok, but the fit was weird as the fabric is far too stiff and rigid for its size. It seamed like they developed the harness for a big dog and then just shrunk the size without any regard for the smaller dog needs.I returned it just after trying it on the dog. However, to make a bad experience worse (and really expensive) I never got a refund! Even thought I printed the label Amazon gave me for returning the item and followed all the instructions, as I have done several times before for different items without any trouble.I do not recommend this harness for small dogs, probably not even for a medium dog, and definitely don't buy unless you are really sure you won't need to return it.

Bad design
This is a bad design as putting the seatbelt through the loops on the back of the harness means the dog is pinned to the back of the seat and can’t turn round or lie down. The chest is also much too short so it rubbed on my dog’s front legs

Safe and secure
Excellent easy to fit harness. I have a Golden Retriever and he is now secure on the back seat when I'm traveling.

Maybe for really big dogs...
Idea is probably great, crash test are convincing. But in real life things seem to be less perfect. First of all - harness hardly fits French bulldog. Any owner of a frenchie knows problem with fitting harness but since Sleepypod listed some breeds that are not compatibile with their product and French bulldog was not among them I thought they checked it. Well, they did not. Second problem is that because of the way seat belt is fixed with harness there is a lot of friction and dog has a lot less freedom then seatbelts alone give. And in my opinion this harness is useless with dogs below 40lbs. This harness needs rethinking of the way seatbelt leads throug it, some separation from dogs body is necessary to decrease friction. Maybe some metal or plastic clip?

Not Designed For XL Dogs, But Better Than Nothing
I got this harness for my 100+ lb dane/lab mix. Even though it was only tested to 90 lbs it still seemed like the safest product on the market. The XL fits her well and she doesn't seem to mind having it on, however when she sits in the car seat she is as tall as a person. This means the seat belt has to be pulled up across the top of the seat to go through the harness. Also when she is sitting she is leaning forward requiring even more seat belt. While the seat belt will reach and click into place, pulling out that much seat belt causes it to lock, preventing her from being able to move at all. I will have to buy a seat belt extender in order to be able to use this harness. It also worries me that the harness only extends to just behind her front legs. If I were to get in a crash, her hind end would still go flying off the seat. Over all, it is better than nothing, and I am glad to have it for her, but I think there is still a lot of room for improvement when it comes to keeping XL dogs safe in the car.

Would not recommend on walks.
It seems really good in the car, but walking my dog with it, it loosens. Very annoying when walking. But in the car seems okay.

Sturdy, But Not Comfortable
Since this was the only truly crash test certified dog safety harness I could find, I got the small size for my 17 pound Havanese. It seems like it would be sturdy and hold him in place well in a crash, but it's pretty stiff and doesn't seem comfortable. I've tried using it as both a car harness and walking harness, but it just seemed too stiff, so now I have to switch my dog into a walking harness or just use his collar for walks. The harness also is a bit too big, but this is the smallest size it comes in. I can find smaller harnesses in other brands, but I like that this is actually crash test certified, so I've stuck with it.

Consumer Reports "ONLY" approved safety harness for dogs.
To understand the safety that restraints can provide in an accident, the CPS looked at systems that manufacturers claimed were tested, crash tested, or have crash protection. They based the test on FMVSS 213 standard, which is the procedure currently used to certify child safety seats. The organization will use the data to help develop standards for performance and test protocols of restraint systems since there are currently no such industry guidelines. The CPS purchased a variety of harnesses and the testing occurred in two phases. Each harness was first subjected to a preliminary strength test; if the harness remained intact during the strength test, it would continue on to the crash test portion of the evaluation. Of the 11 harnesses that claim crash protection, only seven passed the initial strength portion of the test and therefore qualified for the crash test evaluation. The systems were tested using specially designed crash test dummy dogs in three sizes: a 25 lb. Terrier mix, a 45 lb. Border Collie, and a 75 lb. Golden Retriever. The Sleepypod Clickit Utility was the top performer. The dog remained restrained during every test and was deemed to offer protection to not only the pet but to the passengers in the car.

Not so sure.
If you order these, make really really sure you measure *exactly*. I mean repeat the measurement, make sure your dog isn't squirming, etc. Their definitions of small, medium, etc. are not even remotely close to what you might be used to. I have two dogs, each between 25-27 lbs, and the smalls are almost too big. I am not sure what body shapes of dogs they used in designing the product, but it seems like they could have used more variety in that data. The sizes are certified by weight, so it's possible for a dog with the bone structure to fit into a small to outweigh the 25 lb rating. The medium is certified to 45 lbs. Not sure I feel good about that but there are pitifully few good options for quality dog car restraints. And if your dog weighs in the low double digits, don't even bother trying to get this harness. Probably 15-20 lbs and smaller is out of luck. Sleepypod sells a carrier for dogs that are too small for the harnesses but it's twice the price of this harness. Those carriers look awfully small for a 20 lb dog - I'd hate to see my bigger dogs in it.Definitely mixed feelings on this. But if it keeps the dogs safe in an accident, that's all that matters.
