Wish I had purchased this in the first place!
Having had a HX20V that was beginning to flag, I had been looking for a replacement. I did not originally buy the HX90 due to Sony having removed the crop/save function from all it's new models. I was, for once, swayed by the claims and lists of attributes on another brand of camera. Big mistake. After 7 months of being very frustrated with the original purchase, I returned it to a well known high street store (purchased there last minute on Xmas eve due to Amazon Logistics unsurprisingly 'losing' the one ordered from Amazon whilst en route on xmas eve - electronics seem to have a habit of disappearing in the hands of Amazon Logistics) and requested a refund. Having secured the refund and deliberating between 3 Sony Models, I finally purchase this model from Amazon and am now very happy. The camera is excellent (-other than the lack of crop function). Having spent 7 months getting awful out of focus, dull shots, I am now back to snap away and 99% are great shots with barely a glance at what I am aiming at. The colours are so much more vibrant on Sony than on the other brand. I absolutely cannot live without the painting function which turns a dull day into a great photo - not everyone's cup of tea I know but if you like it, Sony are great at it. Photo and video in Sepia is also a fabulous tool as a friend does living history so old photos definitely a bonus for this. What I love most is the Programme function and the fact that there is very little that my hulking great SLR can do that this little camera cannot. There is no need for me to go through every function this camera has as it is easy for anyone interested in buying one to just go download a pdf of the manual online if you want to check what functions are available. The important point is that the camera produces fabulous photos with minimal effort and I am sure when I have had time to do more than take holiday shots, I will be even more impressed than I already am.The only minus points at all are, as previously mentioned, Sony has dispensed with the in-camera cropping tool which was the one thing I used most. However, it appears most brands have done the same, in favour of cropping on phone or tablet once transferred. I was resistant to this at first as was worried about staorage capacity on my phone but having dumped another 1000 photos on it yesterday, it does not seem to be an issue. The second possible minus will depend on preference. Apart from the age of my old HX20V, another reason for the upgrade was direct connection to save cables and laptops to download photos. Previous other brand purchase did this by Bluetooth, Sony does it over wifi. The downside to the wifi method obviously being that if you are out and about without wifi then you cannot transfer. The Bluetooth method could be used at anytime, however, firstly I never had the time or wanted to waste it transferring whilst out and secondly and most importantly, the Bluetooth function drained the camera battery faster than a bucket with a hole in it! So, with that in mind, I decided the wifi was an improvement rather than a deficit. Also the wifi camera to phone transfer was extremely fast and very easy to do, the Bluetooth was complicated and took ages. The Sony mobile to Sony Online Album took a very long time though but that could be my phone. Had I transferred from camera to iPad and then to online album it may well have been faster.Battery life very good, lasted 2 days of constant use whilst away before needing to be charged. (I keep a spare battery with me and a mini charger from Top Max though just in case). Flash on this is also very good, nowhere near as bad as the average 'rabbit in headlights' effect usually produced by flash shots and did not make the shots look cold as some flashes do. This is also the most accurate camera for colour I have had; I have some that can't produce blue correctly on flowers and some that struggle with purple (shots of orchids) but this does a very good job. The zoom is fantastic, quite stunning how good shots are when using the zoom. My previous purchase of other brand, 30 optic and 30 digital, the digital zoom was so useless it wasn't worth using it, not so on the HX90. The viewfinder, not something I had in the HX20V is very handy especially on bright days. So, as the only negatives to this fabulous little camera are relatively minor, I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone wanting a comprehensive compact camera. Do not be swayed by the claims of other brands, this camera delivers exactly what it promises and most importantly, you do not miss that all important try, fly past, candid shot due to the camera did not perform or worse, because you were so busy trying to work it that you missed the entire thing! Just point and shoot, HX90 does exactly as it promises.

but it's fine if you do this
My wife wanted a point and shoot camera, but with a decent zoom capacity, and a viewfinder. The viewfinder is electronic, so you need to have your face up against the rear screen before it works, but it's fine if you do this. The manual that comes with it is not particularly comprehensive, so a bit of web searching is required to find out more info. It's more complicated than a straight forward point and shoot, and the rear screen tends to become a little cluttered. However, the quality is very good, and once you've got used to ignoring what you don't need, it's a very good camera. It's not up to digital SLR standard, but it's an excellent carry round for either holiday snappers, or more serious photographers.

Buy a case!
Lovely little camera with lots of features. Search for DSCHX90 in YouTube and there are several very helpful videos that walk you through all the menus and tell you what they have picked and why. You can then experiment from there. The zoom is really good at x30 but remember lowlight has a bigger impact the more you zoom. The maximum time you can have a shutter open is 30 seconds but this still enough to support very nice star shots. The face recognition, portrait with fuzzy backgrounds and macro all produce lovely shots. There is a dial for shortcuts to particular shots and they pretty much all deliver. The viewfinder is very useful but its double pop out nature makes me wonder how robust it is.The Wi-Fi to phone is really neat. It allows you to send pictures to your phone as one offs, groups or by the day, when you are out and about. You need an app on the phone (free) but once you have this and you understand to set the camera up first before the phone it works every time. Its very small and fits in a jean pocket. which leads me to the one downside- The backscreen, which flips over for selfies, is made of the softest plastic known to man and bright sunlight seems enough to scratch it. Save yourself some grief and buy a case the same time you buy the camera. All in all its done exactly what I wanted- a camera that fits in a pocket that will take better pictures than any phone but still allows you to share great pictures with your friends wherever you happen to be. Just perhaps a bit more robust would be nice, so buy a case.

Excellent pocket sized super zoom camera.
I have been looking for a pocket sized super zoom camera for a few weeks and decided on this one. Including the cash back it was around £100 cheaper than the Panasonic TZ90 and this was a decisive factor in my decision. These 2 cameras were on my shortlist because they both had a viewfinder, a flip up screen and a large zoom.I used this camera last week on a trip to Weymouth and I was very pleased with the results. The colours were great and the pictures sharp, even when using the zoom on its maximum setting. How they fit such a large zoom in such a small camera beats me.Although the screen seemed quite bright and useable in the sunny conditions, I do like the option of a viewfinder. This one seems very good and even has a spirit level. I do have one reservation about the viewfinder. One flicks a switch and it pops up, then one pulls it back a bit before putting to the eye. It’s a bit flimsy and fiddly to be honest, and I suspect it would be the first thing to fail with regular use. I might be being overly pessimistic - it is a Sony so the build quality is probably pretty good. We will see.The other feature that I really like is the tiltable screen. It can be lifted up so that it faces forwards and thus enables easy composition of selfies.Anyway I am very pleased with the purchase so far and would definitely recommend it.
