Atma

I read after the newest Yob album came out that a lot of people consider Atma to be their weakest album. I'm not sure I believe that, but even if it's true, that sets a pretty high watermark. While it doesn't quite reach the level of Clearing the Path to Ascend (for me, one song per side is just about ideal), it's still a really phenomenal album. And the brightly colored vinyl is very attractive too. They are one of those bands where now that I got to see them live once, I am going to be extra-vigilant about any time they're playing anywhere nearby, since I don't want to miss another chance to see them. Even if the engineering on this one is a bit more on the sterile side, the tone is still completely massive.

I am a long time metal fan. (It's easier to just put all heavy music in the metal genre.) It is always a pleasure to hear a metal band that has some unique traits to break up the monotony. The guitar work on this album is excellent and strays from the typical hooks that you hear in most metal today. I kind of cringe when I hear too much screaming or growling, but the guitarist/vocalist pulls off balanced vocals, with just enough guttural rage and "regular" singing to satisfy all metal fans. This is an album that needs to be listen to multiple times to be appreciated, in my opinion. It is dark, doomy, sludgy, sad, beautiful, and twisted. The guitar work alone will keep you scratching your head in wonder. ALL fans of metal should check this out.

This review is a little late and YOB are actually just about to release their new slab Clearing the Path to Ascend. As far as Atma.... WOW! What a terrific adventure into doom metal. YOB seem to have a knack for doing things other doom bands can't. Mike Scheidt's vocals are just incredible. He has the perfect mix of guttural and clean. The mix is great because it still has kind of a primitive vibe to my ears but has a full sound. My favorite track is the opener Prepare the Ground. HEAVY DUTY! Can't wait to get their new album!

I originally ordered the cd but it never came, Amazon was not able to fulfill the order, but the trade off was the auto play which is ok, but i would rather have the physical copy. Any how, Yob rules, Atma is some of the finest music to grace these ears. Yob has become a main staple in my aural diet. Thank you Yob!!!

Could have given five stars if the first few cuts were better. The last song Adrift In the Ocean is awesome.

Der lärmige, nervenzehrende Zeitlupen-Sound von YOB war noch nie etwas für Musik-Ästheten mit Hang zum Perfektionismus. Bereits auf Vorgängern wie "The unreal never lived" , "The illusion of motion" und dem unverzichtbaren "The great cessation" bewegte sich Mastermind Mike Scheidt und seine beiden Sidekicks stets haarscharf an der Schmerzgrenze - bisweilen ging das krawallige Sludge/Doom/Drone-Getöse sogar darüber hinaus. Und auch der neue 5-Tracker "Atma" ist keinen Deut weicher bzw. zugänglicher ausgefallen. Die ideale Lärmbeschallung für alle Fans von SLEEP , EYEHATEGOD , BORIS und ururalten CROWBAR (zu "Obedience through suffering"-Zeiten). Großartigen Erfolg werden YOB damit sicherlich nie ernten. Aber das wissen sie wohl selbst am besten.Das Grundrezept der Vorgänger wurde selbstverständlich konserviert und mit einer rabiaten "Low budget"-Produktion in Szene gesetzt, die einmal mehr ans Eingemachte geht. Andere Bands dürfen gern weiterhin mit ihren weichgeklopften High-Tech-Sounds gen Massentauglichkeit drängen. Mike Scheidt geht lieber den anderen Weg - minimalistisch, räudig und zeitlos gut. Indes ist es natürlich auch keine Überraschung, dass neue YOB-Songs wie "Upon the sight of the other shore" , "Prepare the ground" sowie der ellenlange Nervenzwirbler "Before we dreamed of two" dem Hörer mordmäßig viel Geduld abverlangen. Denn diese radikale Mixtur aus verwaschenem Endlos-Rifing, fiependem Rückkopplungen, Sprachsamples, zähes Slo-Mo-Drumming und beinahe manischem Gesang (Mike Scheidt in Höchstform!) geht zunächst mal derbe an die Substanz. Spätestens beim dritten Durchlauf nimmt der dreckige Sludge-Kobold aber Anlauf...und springt mit einem gewalt(tät)igen Satz ins Langzeitgedächtnis des Hörers, um dort sein grausamen Werk zu verrichten. Neben dem Sound obengenannter Bands scheinen auch die traditionellen BLACK SABBATH-Vibes immer wieder durch, wodurch "Atma" über 55 Minuten auch eine greifbare Stoner-Kante anhaftet. Oder anders: YOB klingen in etwa so, als würde man das legendäre DOWN-Debüt "Nola" mit halber Geschwindigkeit abspielen. Alkoholgeschwängertes Proberaum-Flair und selbstgedrehte Kräuterzigaretten inklusive!Der unbestrittene Höhepunkt des YOB-Neulings ist der atmosphärische Rausschmeißer "Adrift in the ocean", bei dem alle aufgestauten Wohlfühlmomente endlich an die Oberfläche schwämmen. Der Hörer nimmt die Einladung zur Traumreise natürlich dankend an - irgendwo verloren in den endlosen Wirrungen zwischen Zeit und Raum groovt sich das Trio (mit Gast-Performance von Scott Kelly) in einen wahren Rausch, dessen Spannung sich von der ersten bis zur letzten Sekunde weiter ausbreitet. Und auch wenn dieser Songs es nicht ganz mit der Band-Überhymne "The great cessation" (Gänsehaut pur!) aufnehmen kann...stilvoller hätte Mike Scheidt dieses Album wohl nicht enden lassen können.Ach, was fasel ich mich hier eigentlich um Kopf und Kragen ?! "Atma" ist eine tolle Scheibe geworden, mit der YOB erneut die gesamte Gefühlspalette zwischen Freud und Leid abbilden. Faszinierender Sludge-Doom für Kaputte. Weicheier sollten weghören - die Krachfraktion greift unbedingt zu !!!
