How long will it record for, and will it only playback in MP3 not record?

You can only play back or record you can not do both at the same time. The size of the sd card dictates how much recording you can do , also the recording quality (accessible thou the menu) can influence the amount of space you use.The high quality uses more space, however a decent sd card ,say 8g or above gives literally hours of recording. I would say 8g gives over 20 hours.

will this work plugged directly into the mains via a micro usb?

With pleasure you can interact with us. This radio can still work after it is plugged into the power supply via usb. But in each channel will be a small interference. Once it is removed from the power connection, it will disappear. Kindly reminder: Do not charge when you enjoy it. Make sure it is fully charged after you unplug the usb, then use the pocket radio again and you will be more enjoyable.
