Does this radio have the updated firmware?

Unfortunately, there are still issues. The initial version 8820 did not have the 'tuning bug'.Tecsun made changes later which did have the 'tuning bug'. In their wisdom, they called the update 8820!!I understand that Tecsun reverted to the earlier version 8820 around Feb 2016. Of course these are likely not in the shops yet. It is not possible to tell if the bug is present other than to test the radio (it only affects SSB). I purchased mine directly from Amazon in mid Feb 2016 and the bug is present. However, I don't have a problem with it plus nobody knows what benefits were introduced in the bugged version (there had to be a good reason for the update). Bug aside, this is (in my opinion) a very good radio.In short, some version 8820 radios have the 'tuning bug', some do not. Google if you are unsure of the impact of the bug.

I have just bought an nrd 545 with vhf/uhf board fitted but getting poor performance. is this any better on the hf bands?

The PL-880 is very good for a portable, excellent filters and works well with my Wellbrook loop aerial. In my opinion the latter day NRD's were not very good circuit noise-wise, compared with the earlier NRD 515 which was excellent. I consider the only really good general purpose radio of late is the Palstar R30 but they are expensive. Would never have a 545.

Does this radio need a wire antenna

You can use this with the internal ferrite antenna (MW, LW) or the telescopic antenna (SW). Alternatively, it can be used with any long wire antenna for improved performance on Short Wave. Additionally, it comes supplied with a small long wire on a reel for improved portable operation.
