Does the potato need to be par-boiled first before cutting?

No, you cut the potato from raw - no need to par-boil. This is a brilliant cutter, very easy to clean, just pull of the cutting blade from the side and rinse everything under the tap. You won't be disappointed. Hope this helps.

does it handle big size potatoes ?

no i'm afraid not how ever if you cut your potato in half length ways you can still make long chips bring the handle down quickly and send potato through in one single movement otherwise the spud will get stuck I hope this will help you
