Thank you for you seeing it. .co.uk At the time of this recording Earl Hines, though one of jazz's greatest pianists, had been out of the public eye for some time. Changing fashions had sidelined him and it wasn't until 1964 that Americans woke up again to his significance. It was typical of French perception however that he should be recorded in Paris in this ideal trio setting. The local accompanists provide discreet backing while Hines demonstrates all his qualities--a pervasive sense of swing and technique to spare, unflagging inventiveness in both hands (which sometimes seem to lose touch with each other but always uncannily meet once more) and deep-seated emotions where appropriate. He plays 15 standards (of which three are previously unreleased) at varied tempos and there is also a new alternative take of "Muskrat Ramble", which Hines treats with joyous abandon There was a relaxed, cheerful ambience at this date which characterised the pianist's general attitude to both music and life. --Graham Colombé
