Elements of Style: Designing a Home & a Life (A Guide to Home Design)

I'm an Architect and loved this book. It gives you inspiration to do interior design and urges you to (at least partly) to use items you already have. Bring out everything that is beautiful and hide the rest (or give to second-hand shops). Some good tips that I hadn't thought of before. Realised also that the life of an Interior Designer is not any less stressful than an Architect's, so won't be changing careers just yet ;) The book advises that you shouldn't expect your home to look like an interiors magazine photoshoot but design it livable and practical, while not compromising on appearance. Good advise.

Fabulous book! A classic of its kind. The passion for design transpire and it is materialised in client-oriented outcome/ design. I do like Eric's philosophy of working with the client's items that make a house a home. It reads like a chat with a friend. I do highly recommend this book and I am waiting impatiently for the second one. For those into pure technical, soulless kind of text-book advice, maybe this is not for you, though this book gives a good insight into the practicalities. Thank you, Erin👏

If, like me, you are buying for an Interior Designer friend, then good luck. Being a middle-aged single man, if it's not black or silver, that's as far as my house design aspirations reach. The book itself is smaller than I was expecting. The pictures made me think it would be a large-format coffee table book, but in reality the book is slightly smaller than A4 size. It is beautifully made and full of very high quality photographs, on quality paper. I have no interior design skills what-so-ever, so many of the room designs are not my cup of tea, but they are certainly idea creating. I never knew there were so many styles of sofa (laughs). The author's writings are both informative and humorous. If you do know someone with a more creative mind, and a leaning towards home design, I am sure they would appreciate this book, if only to see what is achievable with different furniture and materials. Just prepare yourself for the 'leopard skin staircase'. Also, the book does show the dollar price on the back cover of $37.50 (£30.60)

I purchased this for my grandmother who doesn't use the internet but loves interior design. She has spent many an afternoon browsing the pages and has been inspired to switch things up in her own home. A wonderful gift!

No wonder this book is so popular it’s a beautiful stylish book to look at for display but it’s an interesting read also. Full of ideas for interior design
