It works well & even looks quite nice, until you pick it up & look more closely. It is incredibly light, a result of being made of the thinnest metal possible. It is also held together by crimped joints. Amazingly it feels pretty solid which means it's a pretty cunning design. Treated carefully it may last, but a bit of abuse or neglect might result in a very short life. The low cost suggests it is only painted on the outside so a bit of rust inside might kill it quickly. To be honest for just over £5 delivered you can't complain as a genuine one would be many times this!

Shoddy, substandard and even dangerous
The parts don’t articulate with each other very smoothly. It took a long time to figure out how to adjust the glass case without running the risk of breaking it. And I needed to do this first, so I could access the very basic instructions that were contained inside it.Also - comparisons between the lamp I received and the one in the picture have been interesting. It’s a slightly different shape and actually looks a lot cheaper. But the worst thing was the lock. My best guess is that it was meant to be childproof. Well, it makes sense for it to be difficult for children to access, but there was no clue about how to remove it. I was reduced to trying - without success - to press and twist, or to see if there were any alternative options. It didn’t help that the cap was incredibly stiff, because it was the first use. It took me twenty minutes to get the cap off, and when I finally did so, a spring fell out of it and there was a secondary cap underneath it. I still can't tell whether this was meant to be part of the main cap and had somehow become disconnected, or was a safety feature - part of the “childproof lock”. Perhaps even some packing feature that needs to be removed before first use. It has been impossible, since then, to reattach the main cap or to remove this subsidiary cap. It’s firmly wedged into the hole and in my attempts to work it out, I actually sliced my thumb on the exposed sharp edges.I made repeated attempts to contact the sellers, but didn't get an actual response until a month later. And even that was just an automated cut-and-paste offer of a refund with no apologies or acknowledgement of any inconvenience.

They're great for the money, but are for light domestic use only, not harsh conditions
I bought these for emergencies and a backup in case of an electricity cut. They're lightweight and easy to use but won't stand up to the rigors of camping for long. They provide low levels of light compared to electric lanterns but will burn much, much longer and the fuel won't degrade over months or years the way batteries do. As an aside I would mention they are far superior to candles with a higher level of light, the ability to dim or turn up the light and less vulnerable to drafts and easy to carry around. As for romantic dinners ? The lamp wins over candles every time and evokes a feeling of yesteryear.Overall they're fantastic to have set aside for emergencies but if you want something rugged to take in the great outdoors you'll need to look elsewhere.

Flawed design
Having bought similar lanterns in the past, I initially I thought "not bad for the price", but these (I bought two) are cheaply and badly made with a silly flaw. In short, you can't access the oil reservoir as the stopper doesn't unscrew. You just end up turning the shiny metal stopper cover which isn't properly fixed to the stopper. The only way to access the reservoir is to use force and pull the stopper out, which then wrecks the thread and deforms the soft metal surround. To close it, you have to force the stopper back in. Obviously, this makes oil leak out if the lantern later gets inadvertently turned on its side. When the lantern is lit if works very well, but I would save your money and buy better made one.

Cheaper version is the same!
The non branded version of this lamp type although the picture is different (this one was supposedly larger) is £3 cheaper and exactly the same. That one I gave a 4 out of 5 rating, nothing wrong with this other than unnecessary additional cost.

It works but filler cap is poor design!
Well I would not say its large. And not blue ether. Put it this way it works. It opens OK it burns OK and on some reviews people seid they don't no how to turn it off well you don't turn it off, you lift the lever and blow it out! What I will say about it is the filler cap is crap. Poor design, it is easy to cross thread it and you have to push the cap down to shut it. A safety feature, witch is a bad design. If it didn't have this safety feature it would be a good lamp!I would not by this again and will look elsewhere as I wanted a couple! By the way it's probably not a good idea to use paraffin in this lamp! As it will black out the glass, lamp oil is better, oderless lamp oil works better!

Sympa
