The jury is out
I bought this as a replacement for an old Sansa Clip which has done good service over the years, but has a limited amount of storage. The blurb suggested the Fiio would take 256GB of files, which is a decent capacity for 320 bit MP3s.I'll admit I was seduced by the £50 off deal on Amazon. After having the Fiio for 2 months I still took the Clip to the beach. I don't understand the controls and trial and error hasn't yet solved the question of whether the Chinese(?) instructions explain how to use them - somehow only around 60 tracks are currently showing up on the device. On the Amazon site some users suggest performance can be improved by downloading a firmware upgrade - but as a non-tekkie I haven't yet summoned upthe courage to download whatever's necessary to do this. In a nushell, the Fiio may be good, but the user interface is not intuitive, and some sort of English instructions would be helpful. The jury's out for now.

Awesome sound
I purchased this model to replace the first generation X1 which I loved but which finally gave up the ghost. So this 2nd gen model X1 sounds as good - and that's very, very good I think, but....It may be just me, but why oh why do manufacturers insist on giving us radiused edges nowadays. The 1st gen model had square edges but with the 2nd generation model the purchase of a case was vital to save the thing from persistently jumping out of my hand like a bar of soap.If you're only concern is sound quality though, get one. The Fiio X1 really delivers. :)

The player is quite a nice piece of kit
The player is quite a nice piece of kit, the sound quality is excellent (I'm tempted to say better than my iPod Classic!).The buttons are slightly raised making them easy to find and the scroll wheel works smoothly. The micro SD card fits nicely inside the unit and does not protrude keeping it nice and safe.Unfortunately the quality of the hardware is seriously let down by the poor quality of the software. The user interface too-often freezes, requiring a full restart, and is pretty ropey. It feels like a jigsaw which was put together in stages but without any idea what the overall picture looks like.If the firmware was better (no bugs!) I wouldn't hesitate to give it 5 stars. However as it stands it's lucky to get 3.
