The Tudors

Tudors 9: Publishers 0
Richard Rex has added a lively and possibly controversial account ofhis subject to the many already on the market. Despite some strangeomissions (perhaps caused by inadequate space) he covers all the majorissues of the period sensitively. But he has been seriously let downby his publishers. They provide excellent colour plates of contemporaryportraits but made the unwise decision to reproduce a large number ofdocuments in microscopic form. Even with a magnifying glass they arehard to read and sometimes impossible to decipher; it is as if they hadbeen photocopied by someone who had failed to notice that his machinehad almost run out of ink. As it is, they are a waste of space, whichcould more profitably have been filled by allowing the author to expandon some of his more condensed arguments.

Good History but Bad Presentation
I like a good read when the writer follows historical events but weaves them into a fascinating story. This was recomended as the best history of the period and I like the doubts and questions raised about previous accounts of the personalities involved. So it's good history for students but I would have preferred more detail in a longer book. The printing and binding are terrible. The typeface is too small, the margins cut away, the illustrations are badly printed. The pages are without stitching so to reach the beginning of the line at the narrow internal margin, you have to bend open the book causing the pages to fall apart. It's not a beautiful volume for my shelf!
