Neutral Milk Hotel were part of the esteemed Athens, Georgia psychedelic Elephant 6 collective, which was also home to Olivia Tremor Control & Apples In Stereo. Shunning the mainstream and performing rarely to the dismay of fans meant that 'Aeroplane…' never received its due exposure. Acknowledged by indie cognoscenti as a lost classic, its scope & influence can be traced from the macabre tones of the Arcade Fire ("'In the Aeroplane Over the Sea' is one of the most completely inspiring rock records I've ever heard… everytime I finish listening to it I feel like I've lived through something I'll never quite understand, something really big.' Ben Reed Parry of the Arcade Fire), to the exploratory journeys of Anticon/Mush crew - "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is absolutely the most inspiring album, lyrically, that I have ever heard Jeff Mangum's lyrics are the closest anyone has ever come to putting my dreams into music. I don't know what else to say, other than this is the one album I would take on a deserted island if I had only one choice" - Boom Bip

Unbelievable. Must have for any indie/alt rock fan!
The vinyl arrived early and in perfect condition. What more could you ask for quality wise? And that’s not even mentioning the music which is incredible! I’ve heard that it’s finally been recognised as one of the best albums of the ‘90s and I couldn’t agree more.

A Piece Of Genius That Is Both Simple & Surreal
In the aeroplane over the sea is for many the realization that some of the greatest things are born of simplicity. For others it is a bitter disappointment after all the hype it has gained from internet/magazine reviews and musical influence. For me, having never heard anything classified as even remotely 'indie' I decided that this would be a good place to start. That was 6 years ago, and even today I still think that this is the greatest album ever.Jeff captures so many penetrating themes, which include indulging in child-hood fantasy, to creating surreal worlds that would rival any. His voice is so unique, and this can either entice or turn you off the album. Needless to say, I think that it is beautiful, the way he strains the voice and almost appears to take no breaths during verses.I seen on itunes this be described as 'a marching band on an acid trip', and this is what this is.As for the vinyl, it comes with a poster containing what would be in the 2009 re-issue gatefold, and a download code. The sound quality is very high. The Fool still remains one of the few songs that creates an emotional response in me every time.

Great record. Be careful who you order it off!
No problem with record. Big problem with dodax-online-UK. Everything I have ordered from them, I have not received. Kudos to Amazon service as I was refunded and have now purchased from one of their other sellers.

Stopped me in my tracks
Not often that music stops me dead these days, but on hearing this that's exactly what happened! It's not an easy album per-se, but is catchy and tuneful. But it's the sheer variety and rawness that is it's strengths. Vocally, Mangams not the greatest, but that just adds to its purity and rawness. The acoustic rhythms and sheer energy and drive throughout the album power it on and on, interspersed with real emotion and leftfield lyrics. When it ended at 40 minutes I felt bereft and put it straight back on, hardly believing what I'd just heard.Fuzz-folk is the best description I've heard levelled at it, but don't think kaftans and beads, it's so much more than that: brave, relentless and originalThe mate who lent it to me, lent it to 2 others after me, neither were blown away by it, but I would class their taste as a bit more "safe", so if you don't like musical challenge, move along and drown in your own sea of mediocrity ;)For all others, buy buy buy - it's only a fiver, a relatively cheap risk methinks :)

ABSOLUTE BANGER
I don't have much to say on this one. Amazing album, decent price. If you haven't listened to it before, go do it right now and then consider buying this. Thank you, Jeff Magnum

near perfection.
I originally brought this album years ago, unfortunatly i let an old friend borrow it and never got it back. For years i have felt like a little piece of me has been missing. Now with this wonderful album back in my possesion thanks to amazon, who as always are efficiant with their deleiverys. i feel whole again. The album has become a cult classic as years have gone by. I have noticed it has now got quite a following, if you go by youtube clicks that is. And the fact rolling stones mag have backtracked on their original review of the album, disming it and complaing of the singers vocals straining the limits of an affectless voice now saying its a masterpiece, says alot. Its good 'folk'y lo-fi rock music' if you wanna call it that. It has charm, emotion and catchy songs.this album from the cries of "i love you Jesus Christ" on the king of carrot flowers, to the bagpipes on track 10 is well worth the money. even if like me you have had to buy it twice.

A revelation!
So glad I discovered this CD. It is a fusion of all the music I love - from medieval music to Punk rock - all blended together to create one amazing and totally unforgettable sound! The singer uses his voice almost like a human hurdygurdy and the overall effect is incredible. The lyrics are so beautiful and thought provoking. It’s one of those precious recordings that you get more and more out of with every listening. Thank you Neutral Milk Hotel for the experience!
