Black Adam (Blu-ray)

Unexpectedly good movie.
I haven't read any comic books since I was a pre-teen back in the late 60's. But, I do like superhero movies like Superman, The Incredible Hulk, and The Fantastic Four. In the last few years there has been an over saturation of superhero movies. And as the movies continue, the stakes keep getting ridiculously higher - they have to save the Earth against overwhelming odds and even the entire universe. After a while that gets really tiresome. If the odds are so overwhelming and impossible to beat then I'm over it. I started getting tired with all of these superhero movies. But, I like Dwayne Johnson. I really liked "Doom," "Bay Watch," and "Rampage." His Jumanji movies were also OK. So, when I saw that he had a new movie called Black Adam, I thought I would check it out. I had a difficult time finding any reviews, so I knew nothing about what it was about. As I stated, I haven't read any comic books since the 60's, but, I have watched a number of superhero movies. But, I don't pay attention to the differences between DC and Marvel comics. The beginning of the movie was a little drawn out with the writer setting the background of Teth Adam. Who was a native of the kingdom of Khandaq. Which was a nation enslaved by it's evil King. The clothes and such looked similar to ancient Egypt. The king has his people mining a rare mineral which has mystical power that the king want's to build a crown to give him power. A group of mystics empower Teth Adam with power to defeat the king and then he is placed in a tomb for thousands of years.A private company of white foreigners using mercenaries, has invaded and enslaved the people of modern day Khandaq and forced them into mining for them and they also want to find the missing crown for it's power. Sarah Shahi plays a commoner who located the hidden crown to keep it out of the hands of the evil company, but, is captured and summons Teth Adam who appears. For me this is the best part of the entire movie. Teth Adam faces off against the evil company's mercenaries who are armed with small arms (machineguns and grenades) as well as rockets, heavy machineguns, and attack helicopters. He literally takes no prisoners and it was fantastic. Shortly after Teth Adam appears, the lame superheroes from the Justice League, Hawkman, Dr. Fate, Atom Smasher, and Cyclone show up to capture or kill Teth Adam. Dr. Fate/played by Pierce Brosnan? I never heard of him before. I immediately thought of the magician from The Avengers played by Benedict Cumberbatch.Anyway, I wasn't familiar with this team of superheroes. I was really put off by the lead superhero, Hawkman, played Aldis Hodge. His character was very arrogant and demeaning. When he first encounters Teth Adam, he immediately threatens him with eternal imprisonment or death if he refuses to accept his terms. Really?? That's not a very diplomatic way to speak to someone with immense power that has been released from thousands of years imprisonment. Not even a Hi, how you doing? Just Bow down to me or die. I really didn't like that character at all.Supposedly these superheroes were the good guys? Yet, when a superhero appears to save the people of Khandaq from their enslavement by privateers, the Justice League wants to kill him or lock him up and didn't care a wit about the enslaved people. Even the people of Khandaq jeered the Justice League characters for saving mercenaries that Teth Adam had tossed about and not doing anything to help them.SPOILER ALERTThe main villain is killed and Teth Adam agrees to give up his powers and is then transported by the Justice League to their hidden underwater prison where they have imprisoned many villains in suspended animation. Teth Adam was at first a possible security threat to them. But, after he saved his country from the mercenaries and voluntarily gives up his powers, they still want to imprison him. When they arrive at the Justice League prison, it looks more like a villain's lair with a group of prison guards in black garb following a blond female who is apparently in charge of the prison and she has an arrogant smirk on her face. This Justice League and all of it's characters look and act like the villains. They put Teth Adam in suspended animation and then the Khandaq villain they had killed is resurrected as a more powerful demon threatening not just Khandaq, but, the world. Justice League screwed up. And Dr. Fate uses his mind to wake up Teth Adam from his suspended animation prison, for his help. Teth Adam has to fight the evil guards and escape the prison, in a weakened state, in order to help them fight the new, more powerful demon threat. Viola Davis' character appears at the end and is just as condescending and arrogant as Hawkman, after Teth Adam has helped the Justice League save Khandaq as well as the world. She agrees to allow him to stay and not kill him as long as he doesn't venture out of Khandaq. After that Superman appears to reinforce the Justice League threat.SPOILER ALERT OFFI went into this movie thinking it was going to be just another long winded superhero movie. I was surprised. It was an unexpectedly good movie. In spite of the Justice League mucking things up.
