Hi, is this a solid wood or laminate uke? Thanks

Nowhere is laminate mentioned . Sengon wood seems to be the main component. The gloss finish could be a bit off-putting. I bought it for the wide- neck and am very satisfied. I`m surprised there are not other wide-neck ukes about. Tell me if there are, please.

Can it be plugged into an amp?

not directly , you'd have to buy some sort of pick up or transducer to clip on I can recommend this ukulele it's not the cheapest but it sounds very good !

are there any issues with the "vintage" style open gear tuning pegs? are they as bad as I remember as a kid many years ago or have they improved?

We bought this for our daughter and she has no problem tuning with the pegs , but as it is her first one she has nothing to compare it with
