Does cordless mean it does not need to plug in?

"Cordless" is misleading. I have this unit and I believe they are saying it's cordless because there is not a cord coming out of the unit. There is just two prongs on the back of the handle that plug directly into an ext cord. Hope that helps!

Can this suck up thatch after running a dethatcher or lawn clipping?

It would suck it up. My quit working after the 3rd time to use it. I bought mine in the winter time so by the time I started using it the warranty was up.
