Is it true Kingston switched the NAND and is now performing like crap?

Yes, they did!  The everyday average user wont really see anything, because it will be faster than the HDD you just replaced.  But those of us who know what they're buying, will see a very very big drop in write speeds.  There has been a rep for Kingston who has left comments concerning their drives, and is trying to smooth things over........  It's not working!  They most likely pulled their switch and bait in an effort to increase profits and decrease production costs.  You don't see makers like Samsung or Crucial doing this, because giving us consumers a quality product really is that important to them.  I also speak from experience with a Kingston SSD......  I returned it as defective the next morning and went with Samsung.  All my rigs are using Samsung SSD's and run exactly as advertised.

Question 2

Does it come with SATA/USB kit for cloning my existing HD or do I need to buy the kit?

You have 2 options. Buy the Kingston Digital 240GB SSDNow V300 SATA 3 2.5 (7mm height) Desktop Bundle Kit  which includes everything you need. It's available here at Amazon or at Newegg.com and is very convenient to use, although it costs more. Alternatively, you can search Amazon and elsewhere for " SATA 3 cable ", " SATA power adapter ", and " 2.5 to 3.5 adapter ". For cloning software search for and download  EaseUS ToDo free version. The main menu of EaseUS ToDo free version has a CLONE option; choose that plus Disk Drive and check the little box for "Optimize for SSD". Good luck.

Will it work with XP and non sata cables

Accepted Answer

Yes, it works with Windows XP. Do a search for "optimizing an SSD in Windows XP" or similar search phrase. Basically, you do these things: Turn off scheduled Defragmentation if you have it scheduled. SSDs should not be defragmented. Turn off Windows "Prefetch"; like defragmenting it's not needed. Allow a half hour or more each of "idle" time with no programs, apps, games or internet running. This allows the SSD to erase (called "Garbage Collection") any areas where you have deleted stuff and emptied the Recycle Bin. On Windows 7 or 8 a feature called TRIM does a slightly better job of garbage collection but, hey, no big deal. There are other "tweaks" you can do, but they are unnecessary. Also, for around $12 you can buy a PATA-to-SATA adapter, a small device which plugs onto the end of the IDE wide ribbon cable. On the back of the adapter is a SATA connector. If your computer has a SATA power cable, fine. If not, you'll need a short adapter cable to convert the old 4-pin Molex power lead into a SATA power plug (these are very inexpensive). This only works for a desktop PC, not for a laptop because there's no space for the adapter in a laptop. Performance-wise, this arrangement will be way, WAY faster than your old regular hard drive. And, if you upgrade to a newer computer later on it will be even faster!

when it says it comes with an adapter does it mean it comes with a 2.5" to a 3.5" adapter? just want to make sure.

Accepted Answer

No. The adapter simply increases the thickness of the drive in case you have a laptop that needs the old style thicker drive. If you want to slot this drive into a 3.5" bay, you will still need a 2.5 to 3.5 bracket.
