Yes. but decreases the stability of the chair. Each handle inset if a button-lock. So it is removable.

The one I ordered was perfectly fine. It may have been broken in shipping somehow.

if you're looking for the maximum width: outside edge of armrest to outside edge of armrest: 22.5" the seat itself is 16" wide, edge-to-edge

Q: what is the width measured from the inside of the left handle to the inside of the right handle?

The seat itself is about 15 inches. From the top of the handle on the left to the top of the handle of the right is about 23 inches. If you’re looking for a shower chair for a larger person this one works great. It’s sturdy , well balanced and easy to get into and out of it. I highly recommend it.
