Porsche 911: The Ultimate Sportscar as Cultural Icon

‘It is the cultural history of a romance’
This book is simply an ode to a culture. It isn’t just about a car but speaks to the myriad ways in which the said car is appreciated, and foremost, is about the people who drive it.You can find all manner of books which describe with varying levels of dullness the minutiae and pedantry of the cars since their inception. Perhaps those details entertain some, but then this book won’t be of use. Perhaps other books which tell about the eponymous originators in all their glorious familial dysfunction may be of greater interest, but these details pale into insignificance when one actually realises that the car is about driving.Sure, the English language translation is rather curious in parts, but it sort of adds to the book’s charm, knowing it’s written from a Germanic perspective. This book tells of the romance of the 911, from how it maybe awakens the senses of a child, to how it still pulls on the heart strings of those who, through age, should reconsider driving altogether, but for the 911’s magic. The book demonstrates so very well that the author not only understands the car, but its very many drivers. As the author writes so eloquently himself, ‘that is why this book remains an incomprehensible labor of love for some less horsepower obsessed readers. It is the cultural history of a romance’.

Interesting in parts but overall a bit rambling and disappointing
I own a classic 911 and love how the brand has developed from the 1960s to the present day. So I thought this would be a riveting read. Sadly it was a bit disappointing, the writing style was at times rambling and not engaging, to the point I still haven't finished reading it.

Not the easiest read!
An interesting book, taking a very different view of the 911 story. Some great information is buried in this rather dense volume with its highly stylized prose. I am finding it an effort to read.
