An emotionally moving coming-of-age drama in the tradition of Another Country and Maurice , starring Danny Dyer. Brendan Behan, a sixteen year-old republican, is going on a bombing mission from Ireland to Liverpool during the Second World War. His mission is thwarted when he is apprehended, charged is imprisoned in Borstal, a reform institution for young offenders in East Anglia, England. At Borstal, Brendan is forced to live face-to-face with those he perceived as the enemy , a confrontation that reveals deep inner conflict and forces self-examination that is both traumatic and revealing. Events take an unexpected turn, and Brendan is thrown into a complete spin. In the emotional vortex, he finally faces up to the truth. Borstal Boy is adapted from the acclaimed autobiographical novel by Irish writer Brendan Behan, before becoming a Tony-winning play in the early 1970 s

A Human and Moving Film.
The action of the film is about Brendan Behan's encounter with those he has considered as "the enemy," It is a confrontation that reveals a profound inner conflict in the young Brendan. This is both traumatic and revealing. Events take an unexpected turn and Brendan is thrown into a complete spin. In all the emotional turmoil, he finally faces the truth of his situation. Shawn Hatosy who plays the part of Brendan Behan is a talented young actor and one's sympathies are with him from the start. Danny Dyer who takes the role of the gay sailor Charlie Milwall, Behan's friend, is equally convincing. The coming of age element, although important, is only one of the themes presented in the movie. I found this a very moving and worthwhile film. At Borstal, Brendan is forced to encounter those he has considered as "the enemy," It is a confrontation that reveals a profound inner conflict in the young Brendan. that is both traumatic and revealing. Events take an unexpected turn and Brendan is thrown into a complete spin. In the emotional vortex, he finally faces up to the truth.

Danny is wonderful in this film
This is Danny Dyer's third film, playing (Charlie Milwall) an openly gay sailor, sent to borstal for theft. It's a touching story of friendship and love, in my option is one Danny's finest performances.

An entertaining film and good value for money
An interesting and absorbing film. The mainly young cast produce a high standard of acting, especially Danny Dyer.Michael York's interpretation of the role of the Borstal Governor is also noteworthy. An entertaining film and good value for money.

Borstal boy filmed account
I watched this film on T.V. and enjoyed it so much I sent to Amazon for the DVD which was better because it had 5.1 sound and extra items included.Danny Dyer was excellent as Charlie and Shawn Hatosy also as Brendan Behan. The whole cast great and convincing. The ending was tearful maybe because I became so fond of the two actors and could identify with their pain. I lived every moment of Charlie's emotions because Danny Dyer and Shawn brought the whole thing so beautifully to life. I remarked in the book review how much the two stories differed. But I sensed each told a genuine account, highlighting different events.
