The origins of the hula hoop are unknown. There have been no accounts of tribesmen using hula hoops in the deepest swathes of the Borneo Jungle nor any other wilderness, not even the Australian Outback, for the purpose of warfare, personal or third party mutilation or as a pagan love rite not even as a fitness aid.The hoop first became known and gained an international popularity in the 1950's when a plastic version was marketed by California's Wham-O toy company and Carlon Products Corporation selling 25 million hoops in less than four months. The hoop craze steadied off after that and whilst always being in the background has seen a re-emergence in the past few years with an International Holiday World Hoop Day celebrating the hoop around the world.In 1958, at the height of the craze Georgia Gibbs had a smash hit record with "The Hula Hoop Song", and performed it on the top rated "Ed Sullivan TV Show".Christabel Zamor, "the Hoop Girl", is at the forefront of the hoops current popularity as a 'fitness aid' and twirls a Hula Hoop, around her taut, Californian sun-kissed body, manoeuvring it from her voluptuous hips to divine shoulders and feet with seamless transition and imperceptible effort, shouting out to others "Thrust, don't rotate!" (Phew, excuse me whilst I just get an ice cold shower, ah that feels better now where was I?) Endless DVD Fitness video's have been made in which the "hoop" features to some extent or another, as the answer to the world's health and fitness crisis. Apparently a few well aimed thrusts of your hips and twirls of a hoop, will if you are not arrested for indecency, give you a few extra years of having your relatives visit you in an old peoples home.As we discovered when we took very prompt delivery of this bundle of different coloured and seemingly well made hoops, they mystically take on the persona of The Pied Piper of Hamlin, instantly attracting children and adults alike, all gyrating their hips (those that had discernible hips) in all manner of directions and contortions, in an effort to stop the gravitational force pulling the hoops down to the ground like a sack of stones. It was strange because children seem to relatively easily twirl the hoops around their supple frames whereas the adults have more of a problem that does not seem to diminish with sweating and cussing!The hoops are also very useful as sport game aids for example, bean bag scoring targets, hoop and stick races, and obstacle races, either upright for 'ducking' through or lying flat on the ground and 'fast footing, across.A very adaptable and entertaining product representing excellent value for money that will provide many years of fun for all ages.

Have bought these before. They are solid, extruded plastic with a welded joint and generally ensure all manner of punishment! Be aware that these hoops are not indestructible and it is not a good idea to bend them out of shape etc as the plastic will snap under extreme pressure. However as this is not the normal use for a hula hoop, these are generally good value and last well. Add tape to jazz them up!

If only there was a black one i would have had the whole set. They make a fabulous London 2012 display outside our house.

very flimsy product, several of the hula hoops broke soon after they were played with, poor value for money wouldnt buy again

Excellent hoops which I use for practice especially for tricks where my heavier hoops can hurt me if I fail. Later on I go to the normal hoops. The price was great too the only problem is if people are not interested in 4 hoops but well, for the price you are not terribly out of pocket and you can always offer the other ones to someone else. In my case I can use it for guests or even sell them to my class mates but I will keep them.

We bought a set of these to use as hoops for the Nottingham Quidditch Society and they've lasted longer than the metal garden poles we use to hold them up. So, yeah, good quality! :D

As soon as I saw them I reverted back to my childhood. I ripped off the packaging & started using one straight away. The hoops are great value & were delivered really quickly.

Our second set...they're great gifts for four legged friends too! Purchased our first set in 2011 and the yellow hoop we kept for our black Lab Retriever, still looks good as new and we keep it outside all year round...no sun fade from our yellow hoop. It's great training/fun for pups to go through too, kept at ground level, as shown.
