Well illustrated Martin Luther biography for children
A beautiful book. Good, simple yet thorough, history of the great Reformer's life for school age children. Written by the brilliant Dr. Paul Maier, who also wrote a scholarly edition for adults.CAUTIONSIt is wise not to view even the Reformers as infallible and inadvertently accept some of their own biblical misinterpretations. Luther, as all people, was not perfect. You can use this as a teaching tool. Ask the children, "What are some of the things we can admire and emulate about Luther's life?" Also, "What can we learn from his life to carefully avoid?• Luther should have had a biblical spirit of compassion towards the Jewish people. "He was angry with... [those] who did not convert to Christianity once the gospel had been restored." ~ML book How sad!• Be aware Lutherans believe the sacraments are a means of grace. The Bible says baptism is symbolic and communion is a remembrance. The Bible does not say they are as a means of grace. We do these in obedience to scripture. "Preaching and celebrating the Sacraments were how Luther proclaimed the forgiveness of sins..." ~ML book"It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man." Psalm 118:8-14PRINT QUALITYQuality binding, beautifully formatted book, printed on good semi-gloss paper. A fine oil painting illustration is featured on every two facing pages

better for older kids
Beautiful picture book highlighting the important events in Luther's life, and why the Reformation was the result. Great resource for introducing the subject to kids, but would disagree with the recommended age -- the vocabulary used and Luther's belief in the concept of grace (a person can't "earn" their way to heaven) a bit over the head of younger kids (4-6), altho they still will pick up on basic story. My experience with reading this to kids is that even those a bit older (8-10) will enjoy, and probably come away with a better grasp of the importance of Luther's life and teachings. I like that the author also touches on the fact that for all Luther's greatness, a few of his opinions (I believe much later in his life) weren't necessarily favorable -- allowing you to respect his genius without making him a "saint". Not at all "preachy" -- just a good overview of the story and Luther's beliefs. A book all Lutherans should read, but also important and interesting to those of other denominatons or just interested in history, as Luther's ideas ended up having an effect on many aspects of society (education, politics, banking, etc. -- you'll have to go beyond this book to discover why) which benefit us still today.

Want quick insights into Martin Luther?
An short, informative history by a well-known historian. In a book that is targeted to elementary and middle school ages Maier highlights the impact upon religious and secular life of arguably the most significant thinker of the early 16th Century in Western culture. Luther's carefully-researched work helped to shape the concept of secular vocation, theology, the authority of the Bible, and music in the church. Very effective illustrations.

Biography of a Major Historical Figure
If you are going to teach history to your children, there can be little doubt that Martin Luther is a major historical figure. His critiques of the Catholic Church fundamentally changed the world. Yet surprisingly, there are relatively very few Martin Luther biographies aimed at elementary school aged children. What makes "Martin Luther: A Man Who Changed The World" different from the other biographies that I have read to my children is that it was written by a Luthern for other Lutherns. Although there is this specific orientation, I nevertheless found the book to be both well written and illustrated. Martin Luther led a fascinating life and this book does an excellent job of re-telling Martin Luther's story for young children. Recommended.

Very clear, very well illustrated, very fun
The author made an effort to point to God's hand at work in Martin Luther's life a couple of times, pointing out that the good in Luther's life and efforts came from God (a needed reminder). This book affords a neat opportunity to talk about living out the faith of the gospel of Jesus Christ every day with your children because the whole story focuses on Luther's faith and how you could see it in his life by the things he did. Also, this book taught us (the parents) things about Martin Luther that we did not know!

We should remember him and read this book to our children.
My son read this to my 2 granddaughters.Martin was a man greatly used by God to bravely stand for the truth of the Bible and to proclaim it.
