Does anyone know if this good for cleaning carpet, as opposed to wooden floors?

Good for carpet. Leaves floor wet, must dry after.

How much time does it take carpet to dry after using this steamer?

Depends on the nature of the carpet and the heating in your room. Mine drys overnight

Will the floor cleaner be suitable for a large surface area (2,000 square feet)? Mixture of hard tiles, carpets and laminate flooring.

Yes it will be suitable, even for laminate flooring, will need topping up with water for your floor space, so will need to wait for the steamer to cool down before topping up.

Is the steam pressure variable, controlled by a knob.

Yes it has a variable smooth turning dial ranging up to 4.5 bars of pressure. I reduce the pressure to the lowest setting when steaming my plants and just around halfway when cleaning my wood flooring and at it's highest for tiles and other non-permeable hard surfaces.
