Q: It states the total size of this unit is 147 x 147cm please could someone tell me the size of the cubes themselves. Thanks

The cubes are 34cm high x 34cm wide and 39cm deep

Q: Are the cubes wide enough to put fabric on the shelves?

I have fabric in mine but folded I love mine because it keeps everything near and tidy

Q: can you miss out one of the horizontals to create a 78 x 78 space suitable for a TV ?

No each one connects together without it I highly doubt it would be stable

Q: Is the weight per shelf from one side piece to the other, ie the whole 4 holes, or just across one of the 4? I want to fill it with quite big books.

It is very sturdy I put large and heavy books on mine plus a heavy mirror on top and no problems so far.
