Review: What A Fantastic Boxset Of Classic British Comedy. - I've been a Carry On fan all my life, the films may be crude at times but there's no denying that they are very very funny and the perfect antidote to feeling down and a tonic for those dark wintery nights. I've had the old VHS tapes of most of the series for some time but last year finally threw them out, I was meaning to upgrade to DVD but never quite got around to it, then imagine my absolute joy when it was revealed that my two youngest daughters had secretly been saving up their pocket money for a few weeks to buy me this for Christmas 2010. What a lovely present on Christmas morning it was and I've spent most of the holiday period watching the films in order, I'm up to Spying now. The quality is amazing and it's like rediscovering these classic anew, the sound has been dramatically improved and the picture is top notch. The extra features are simply wonderful with a commentary for every film, trailers, location reports and archive interviews with such people as the legendary Sid James, I've been in heaven since I got this set. I have a very large DVD collection and I can honestly say that this is the best boxset that I have, it's fantastic and for the price an absolute steal. If you love old classic archive films or if you simply want a good laugh from a time when comedy was funny then look no further than this magnificent set. British Humour at it's finest!
Great collection of films that sadly we will never see again. I am currently going through each disc and have to say am loving hearing the commentaries from the actors who starred in them enjoying looking back at where they were in their careers. I got this set as was fed up when watching on TV how the films would be edited so found this collection and have not been disappointed. Apparently there is one more film that hasn't had an official release but I'm happy with this set. We have lost a lot of the carry on actors but we can enjoy these and have a good laugh. This is for those who grew up watching Carry On and want to own the entire collection.

An American's Perspective
I am a fan of Old Time Radio Shows, and first became interested in the "Carry On" series of films after listening to "Hancock's Half Hour" which featured "Carry On" regulars Kenneth Williams, Sid James, and Hattie Jacques. The frustrating thing about these films is that they are almost unknown in the United States, and so I had to order them from the UK, and watch them on a Region 2 DVD player, before I could get to know them. Having watched them all, I feel that it is a pity that they are so hard to find in the US because, on the whole, I enjoy them greatly. The first thing that was hard to comprehend about this series was the sheer volume of films. Almost 30 were produced in roughly 20 years. As such, there was a great variance in quality. I felt that the early films were really the best of them. I thought they were wonderful ensemble comedies. As time progressed, I felt they became increasingly farcical, relying more and more heavily on double entendre and innuendo. This is fine, but I'm not a huge fan of that kind of humor, so as the series progressed, some of the appeal for me faded. By the end of the 60's, I found the series to have developed a somewhat mean-spirited edge to it. The times were, indeed, changing and they seemed to be leaving the "Carry On" films behind. This is not to belittle the huge achievements of this series. To have a successful franchise which ran through so many films is amazing. The only other franchise I can think which came close are the Abbott & Costello films and I feel that they were nowhere near as appealing as the "Carry On" films. There was some amazing comic talents associated with these movies. I mentioned Sid James, Hattie Jacques and Kenneth Williams before, they were wonderful talents and the reason I became interested in the series. Charles Hawtrey was, however, my absolute favorite of all the regulars. His birdlike appearance, and delivery made me laugh, regardless of the actual jokes. Frankie Howard was another exceptional talent, as was Joan Sims. I am amazed their fame never traveled to the US. The DVD's themselves are of wonderful quality. Each disc has two films, as well as a huge number of extras. Other reviewers have comments on the excellent work which had been done in restoring these films. I've never seen any other copies, so I have no basis for comparison, but they seem to me to be of excellent quality. In addition, the DVD's contain all of the episodes from the 70's TV program "Carry On Laughing," which I thought was a wonderful extra -- although I found the show itself to be painfully unfunny. To summarize, this is an excellent DVD box set at an excellent price. I felt the quality of the films to vary, but there were enough hits to make up for the misses. The "Carry On" franchise was truly exceptional, and I only wish more people in the US knew about it.

Outstanding films!!!!!
In this crazy world we all sure need a laugh and these films take me right back to my happy 1970โs childhood home with my mam, dad and brother. We all loved these films back then when life was so much simpler. I remember watching Carry on at your Convenience with my brother and us laughing so much at Sid James with that budgie!!!!! It was absolutely awesome to watch this film again with my husband us now in our 50โs and still laugh so much today. We look forward to laughing our way through the rest of the movies. I canโt recommend this box set enough! Hilarious!

While the quality (content) of the films may vary and are often debated online, this set has a great transfer for all 30 films of the franchise from 1958-1978 (not the poorly received 1992 Carry On Columbus however). The images are excellent and sharp, and the sound is clear, given their age. And they have subtitles for those of us with hearing problems. These are REGION 2 (UK-Europe) discs and will NOT play on standard DVD players, but play well on multi-region upscaling players. I had some problems with one of my older multi-region Sony players not playing them, so I bought a Megatek player from Amazon and they play nicely on it. I also use a 1080i gaming monitor rather than a TV (although they looked great on my larger TV as well) If you're not familiar with the franchise, these are often bawdy (only mildly so by today's standards, however), slapstick, politically incorrect, and usually very silly. Great fun and great nostalgia for those of us raised with the movies, even if somewhat dated. Still, they sure bring back memories... My only concern is the shipping package the set arrived in: the simple cardboard sleeve had been easily sliced open in transit by the time it arrived. Simply adding packing tape to the back would help prevent such intrusions. Fortunately, nothing was missing when it arrived here.
