Spider-Man: Homecoming [3D Blu-ray]

"You're the Spider-Man... from YouTube."
Is it wrong that I was rooting for Peter to end up with Karen? Jennifer Connelly sounds so fine. Focus, hombre. So I'm not quite ready yet to say SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING trumps Raimi's SPIDER-MAN 2 as the best live action wallcrawler movie ever. That there's watercooler talk about that is a palpable win for Sony. Me, I've always held that the best Spider-Man isn't the one where Peter is a grown-up in his late 20s and married to Mary Jane, but, rather, when he was 15 and awkward and uncool and dirt poor and had epic daily struggles with trying to fit in in high school versus caving in to his massive guilt complex and swingin' out to fight crime. 15-year-old Peter Parker, as served up by Lee and Ditko, was the one I found so accessible when I was a kid. And 15-year-old Peter is what we get in this movie.Tom Holland's interpretation is the most faithful to the comic book version, in spirit and in execution. He's fantastic. He brings tremendous heart to the role. His Peter is naive and super-enthusiastic and is a spastic chatterbox. John Hughes, what? FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF, what? FREAKS AND GEEKS, what? Director Jon Watts sure tried his durndest to channel those things. Lots of fun with Peter juggling his crazy Spidey escapades with the doldrums of high school and his crush on the cute captain (Laura Harrier) of the school's U.S. Academic Decathlon team.By the way, the opening theme song got a big stinking grin out of me. It should sound very familiar to you, too.Thankfully, counter to what the trailers implied, Iron Man is used sparingly, wasn't onscreen as much as I'd dreaded. Don't twist it, I love how RDJ plays Tony Stark, but I was concerned that he would hijack the movie. Stark is in it just enough, and, in fact, there's even significant development to his own personal story arc. And, by the end, Stark even learns a lesson from his protégé. His grumpy chauffer Happy (Jon Favreau) snags just as much or even more screen time, what with Stark tapping Happy as his liaison (read: buffer) to our hero-in-training who, post Civil War, persists in nagging via text as to when the next big mission is.To drive home that Spidey is firmly entrenched in the MCU, the story opens in the aftermath of the devastating Avengers/Chitauri dust-up in New York. It's when we're made aware that there's such a thing as the Dept. of Damage Control, just in case you'd ever wondered who went around cleaning up after metahumans who had just destroyed cityscapes. We eyeball salvage contractor Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton) who, for my money, is easily one of the top three or four villains in the MCU (along with Loki, the Kingpin, and Kilgrave). Toomes is a lunchpail crook, a blue collar guy just sticking it to the Man. I appreciate that he's neither campy nor does he harbor grandiose ambitions like taking over the world. ***Small SPOILER*** in this next sentence: He prefers to lay low under the radar even as he filched and peddled exotic thingamajigs from the detritus of various cape and cowl fighty fights. In Keaton's hands, Toomes is both incredibly menacing AND sympathetic.By the way, someone in the movie - I think it was Ned - wore a shirt that had this on it and made me smile:- "I lost an electron."- "Are you positive?"And I appreciate that they skipped Spidey's origin story. Also, Karen sure is one bloodthirsty chick. It's a diverse cast that work well together. My two stand-outs are Marisa Tomei and Jacob Batalon. Tomei's is a refreshing take on Aunt May who is so smoking hot that she gets hit on or ogled pretty much everywhere she goes. Batalon as Peter's best friend Ned provides plenty of sidekick humor, plus there's a puppy dog sweetness to the guy. Donald Glover shows up for two measly scenes, but you maybe shouldn't treat him like a throwaway character. Zendaya isn't in it as much as Happy is, but you and I suspect she'll play a more significant part in coming sequels.Yeah, I think SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING runs neck in neck with Raimi's SPIDER-MAN 2, with SPIDER-MAN 2 maybe edging it out by a smidge. I loved the vibe of HOMECOMING, loved how the ol' webhead was updated to modern sensibilities while retaining his classic exaggerated bump of responsibility and little guy appeal. I dug how the high school elements, perfectly captured, served to anchor Peter's storyline. And it's easily the funniest Spidey movie (those PSAs!!).Nitpicks? Some. Just like in WONDER WOMAN, the third act, specifically the final showdown, is a meh for me. That extended action beat was shot so murkily I had a hard time figuring out what was going on. Also, where was Peter's Spidey sense? Throughout the film, poor guy was getting smacked around. And ***SPOILERS*** again for these next two things: You can't tell me there was no casualty in that ferry incident, and the "MJ" drop felt forced.Stick around for two end credit stingers. The second stinger happens to be one of the best ever.

Great movie!
If I’m having a rough day, I can always rely on Spider-Man to help me out. No matter the universe we travel to with spidey, he effortlessly swings into action and grasps the attention of my son quicker then Harry wanting revenge. 🙌🏻 After traveling the full multiverse with my son, we are most definitely ready for a tear in the space time continuum. Thank you Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and of course the OG himself, Tobey Maguire. 👏🏻

Great characters
Michael Keaton as the Vulture, in his non-CGI scenes, are some of my favorite villain moments. I'm glad the MCU realized they need to have good villains. The Tony Stark and Peter Parker dynamic feels right. I just think some of the humor doesn't land, surprisingly Zendaya's is at her best here (not as funny in the later ones). Action scenes are okay but just feel like CG fests, nothing spectacular.

Coming of age Marvel movie that captures the angst of being a teen
Spider Man: Homecoming is a superhero coming of age tale. It features Tom Holland as Peter Parker who is going to high school and facing all of the angst associated with being a teenager. He has to balance going to school, his interest in a girl named Liz (Laura Harrier), and being Spider-Man. He has no idea how to do that until Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) asked him to help with the Avengers in the Captain America: Civil War film. Stark becomes a father figure to Parker and helps him mature and hone his superhero skills, while also giving him a new suit. That comes with a cost however as he has to give up somethings to run around fighting the bad guys.In terms of style the movie barrows from the Guardians of the Galaxy series. That means there’s good music and comedy mixed in with the action. Parker’s relationship with his best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) is a great example. Ned wants to be the “guy in the chair” who has all the information and tech to help out the hero. When he gets caught in the computer lab helping out Spider Man a teacher asks him what he’s doing and he replies he’s looking at porn. One of the strong points of the movie is that it really captures what it’s like to be a teenager far better than any of the previous Spider-man films. Parker goes to school, gets picked on, dreams about a girl but is afraid of asking her out so he’s stuck admiring her from afar, there are teachers that don't care, etc.In terms of Marvel Easter Eggs there are plenty. Zendaya plays MJ who in the comics is one of Parker’s girlfriends. Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes is the bad guy, and although they never mention it, he’s the supervillain the Vulture. Two of his henchmen use alien tech leftover from the Chitauri from the first Avengers film to become the Shocker. They even wear yellow jackets that make them look like the comics. Toomes tries to sell some of his alien tech to a man on a ferry named Mac (Michael Mando) who is the Scorpion. Finally, Spider-Man busts Aaron Davis (Donald Glover) to get information on Toomes. He’s known as the Prowler in the Marvel universe. He was a burglar and when he’s trying to buy stuff from Toomes’ men he asks about some climbers that would help with his trade. He also says that he has a nephew. That would be Miles Morales who is another Spider-Man, and was the main character in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.Overall, Spider-Man Homecoming is a really fun watch, and was another great addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.C

Spider-Man begins again. Again.
A new Spider-Man movie. As with 2012's the Amazing Spider-Man, this is a totally fresh take on him shorn of any connections to previous Spider-Man. But unlike that, this one does take place in the same fictional Universe as Marvel comics movies such as those with Captain America, Iron Man, and the Avengers. Thus familiarity with those will help. Especially with last year's Captain America: Civil War. As this shows what happens to Spider-Man after events in that.Peter has to balance school life with superhero life. With pining after the seemingly unattainable girl. With dealing with bullies. And his gig with the Avengers not being quite all he hoped it would be. Meantime, construction crew boss Adrian Toomes has spied an opportunity, and is making money from it. In the role of the Vulture. He and Peter are about to meet, and their worlds will never be the same again...Whilst I liked previous Spider-Man films for what they were, this does the character a power of good by putting him in an established and recognisable cinematic universe. And it's all the better for it. Yet it does keep all that on the sides with cameos and references, and keeps the focus firmly on Spider-Man himself. Which is the right way to go.It also gives us what the previous films didn't. Peter's high school years. All superbly portrayed. Tom Holland is as brilliant in the role as he was in Civil War, and he is surrounded by an excellent supporting cast for these scenes, which do balance character drama with humour superbly.Michael Keaton is also great as Toomes. And it's nice to get a villain who isn't someone who got powers in a lab accident and has gone on a crazed revenge quest, rather one with very believable motivations. It's also nice not to have to go through Spider-Man's origin story once again. The best Spider-Man film ever. Huge entertainment. Well worth a watch. There's an extra scene in the middle of the end credits. And one at the very end as well. They are worth waiting for. Possibly. The dvd has the following language and subtitle options:Languages: English, French, German, Turkish.Subtitles: English, Arabic, Dutch, French, German, Turkish. It begins with an anti piracy ad, which can be skipped via the next button on the dvd remote. It has the usual flyer with code to download copy of the film to a digital device.Extras:Searching for Spider-Man: a seven minute overview of the film and it's production. As short as these usually are, but manages to get a lot in and is really a great watch.Jon Watts: head of the class: four minutes about the director. Not as much detail as the above, but not bad and worth a watch.Spider-Man: homecoming VR Trailer. A two minute long trailer for a virtual reality Spider-Man game. Some good Tom Holland scenes but not enough of the VR section.A look at Marvel's Spider-Man playstation four: a two minute long feature and clips about another Spider-Man game. A short but interesting watch.

A lighter more fun Spiderman here...and so it should be!
Tom Holland is an excellent Spiderman - my fave since Toby Mcquire - but where Mcguire captures the vainer self indulgent, more artistic and romantic side of the character, I think Tom is a nice foil as he is the lighter, comic, teenager version that is that little bit more open to what the world has in store for him.We also new tom was fab from Civil War - such a brilliant intro. If not seen - do not read on from here.........Now here's the but you knew from my opening sentence was going to happen - 'but' the film is not quite a five star experience because of what I have already mentioned. Spiderman, like superman has got alot holding it back as a franchise, and you feel this burden if you are any kind of super hero fan. What is great here is that the directors and producers have done their best to lighten the load and given a snapshot of the character here without feeling they have to start from scratch - like the Matrix, the story works because you are stepping into a world as apposed to having to go though what we already now know about the character. I like the wit of the script and irony of vulture being acted out by oscar winner Birdman himself....really well i might add - and the ending was also really sweet - loved how the vulture stays human really - instead of trying to be more super villain he actually helps protect Peters identity - he 's a villain who's just a bloke - be he has a moral spectrum in the end....a really nice twist.Effects are very good - and theres a lovely pace to this entertaining film. Much better than the last two spiderman films, and nicely attuned to the marvel universe. Id still say that Guardians and Dr Strange are my faves from Marvel so far - closely followed by Civil War, Ant Man and Captain america, but this is a quality film too..

For the most part very good.
I really enjoyed this movie but there was one thing about it that really annoyed me and could have potentially reduced this to a 3 or 3.5 if I thought about it too much. Which I’m trying not too.But slight spoiler, it’s that darn suit. Why the heck did they need to go so overboard on it. I understand some of it. The web shooter havinbloads of modes, fair enough. But spidey was always supposed to have his own super instincts and so on and now they almost tried to give credit to this suit! At one point it even tells him when to jump!!! That should have been cut out. So anyway. It does attempt to spoil the wonder that is spidey a little and given it’s a marvel incarnation I was a little surprised how far they went with it but at the same time, for the most part, they didn’t and it provided just enough entertainment.And...for the most part I did enjoy the movie a lot so only 1 star off it goes.Ragnarok wins the day overall but spidey for me wasn’t many movies behind.

Tom Hollands movie.
My disc arrived bang on time and I watched it immediately. It is a lovely movie in all departments. It is a back to basics take on the iconic hero and is more like the original comic book character I have loved since 1964.Much better than the pofaced last couple of movies.Michael Keaton is brilliant as the bad guy The Vulture who makes money selling weapons from alien bits and bobs left behind from the Captain America Civil War battles.Robert Downey makes the most of his small appearances and is not quite as annoying as usual playing Tony Stark more than Iron Man.But make no mistake this is the young Tom Hollanders movie from the start as Peter Parker/Spider Man.An absolute joy of a performance. You believe in him as a 15 year old awkward schoolboy and as a budding super hero. The action is great with the standout sequence being on the Washington Monument.Overall it is more of a coming of age movie rather than a fully fledged super hero movie like the Avengers but that will be for future movies.A real enjoyable watch. There are also loads of extras to keep everyone who likes that sort of thing happy.
