Scrooge McDuck: The Dragon of Glasgow (Disney Originals)

Great modern take on Scrooge’s early life
I was a bit sceptical at the start as to what I would encounter with this book, but I believe the writers have struck a fine balance between what we know about Scrooge’s life and adding new sides to his personality. They have linked many sides of the story with Rosa’s masterpiece- Life and times of Scrooge McDuck- while adding a new unseen side of him. Also, they have used Scottish accent in the script which makes it hilarious -a moose loose in the hoose- instead of queen English a mouse loose in the house-and it again shows that the writers have put effort into it. The design is definitely modern and not something that the average Ducks fan is used to but to me looks fine, as I wasn’t expecting something like that and the full page design allows for more detail quite often. Overall, if you are a fan of the Ducks go for it, if that’s one your first Ducks comics start with Barks or Rosa, for me it’s a great modern take on my childhood and still to this very day favourite comic characters.

Bande Dessinée perspective
A welcome addition to the life and times of Scrooge McDuck from a different perspective.I enjoyed stories of Scroogey when he was a duckling. Here we get a glimpse of his early life living in poverty with his family. The drab tones adds to depiction of life in 19th century industrial Glasgow where he is expected to go work in the mines in a few years time.Since this is a work of fiction, it’s left to the interpretation of the writer and artist and they did a wonderful imaginative job here.A big thanks to Fantographics for the English translation. There is a finite set of Barks and Rosa comics which many collectors already own.

Huge disappointment
Overall drawing style is very dark, brown and depressing. Those are not the ducks that we used to know and love. Oh, and they lost iconic highlights in their eyes! Sad, very sad.
