Pela 650 - Simply Brilliant!
The Pela 650 is a brilliant piece of quality kit which is simple to use and extremely useful to own. Connecting two tubes together and passing the pipe down the dipstick hole followed by pumping a handle a few times is all that is required to drain the engine oil. It's always better to change the oil when it's warm and the oil is collected in a clear, plastic, tall container which makes collecting and disposal of the old oil easy (dispose of the old oil into the newly bought oil can, without spills). The container has rings at 1 litre points to show how much oil has been removed. Removing oil (5.5 litres from my Ford Focus) with the small pipe took 40 minutes, giving me time to read a paper and have a cup of tea. The same operation on my Golf, using a larger pipe required only 4 minutes to extract 4 litres of oil. Although a filter change is sometimes required, the crawl under the car and engine cover removal was not necessary on my cars. Other jobs included the lawn mower oil change and central heating header tank clean out - I highly recommend the Pela 650, so much so that I bought one as a present for a friend recently, who is chuffed to bits with it!

Slow
It’s ok and did job, but you have to wiggle it about a bit when it stops sucking. Took about half an hour to get out 5 litres from narrowboat

Pela 650 extractor pump
Being a bit "old school" I'm often a little late to embrace the modern way but I recently got talked round to buying an oil extractor pumpDid a bit of research and read some horror stories about pipes coming off and ending up in the sump on the cheaper ones but heard nothing but good reviews on the Pela ones.Since I change the oil on my Skyline twice a year or every 3500-5000 miles I figured it would save a lot of jacking up and removing undertraysThe thicker pipe supplied in the kit felt a little snug so I opted for the narrower bore but even so it pulled the 4.6 litres out of my car in less than 10 minutes, no mess, no drama, very impressed, would recommend it heartily it really makes routine oil changes much quicker and easier for the home mechanic and it's the same method as most dealerships use. It's really easy to pour the waste oil out into an old container for proper disposal as well

Pela 650 : Sturdily build
After connecting the second tube to the first one (rather difficult to do) and inserting it in the dip-stick tube right to the bottom and pumping the handle on the top of the unit a few times, the oil started to flow automatically. After 10 minutes it stopped. By then it had extracted 3.5 liters. By manually pumping I managed to extract another 0.5 liter in 20 minutes. Then I gave up as the yield of each stroke diminished too much. The oil filter typically contains 0.5 liter which can not be pumped out so the device extracted 4 liters out of 5 which amounts to 80%. This is sufficient for an intermediate oil change.

Whats not to like
After years of struggling underneath the car and paying extortionate service charges I decided to give the Pela 650 oil extractor a go. This thing is Brilliant my car a 2009 Mercedes CLK 350. It does help that the oil filter is right under the bonnet, the Pela is supplied with two tubes. The wider one slid into the dip stick tube and reached the sump with ease. A dozen or so pumps and its happily extracting the oil. As my car holds 8 litres you do have to stop and empty out some of the oil to make room for the rest. I had the old filter out the filter housing cleaned, new filter in all done as the oil was being pumped out. The whole job was done in half an hour at a leisurely pace.Okay things to do before you start; make sure the oil is warm, have a spare container if you have more than 6 litres in engine, there is a relief valve on top of the Pela if you have to stop the flow. then reinsert the tube and and pump out the remaining oil. The only thing I found slightly off putting when I pulled the plastic tube from the dipstick there was a thin wire inside the Pela tube that had some how come adrift it is supposed to be held inside the pipe. I checked the other tube and there is one inside that as well, not sure why its in there, perhaps to stiffen the pipe when its being inserted into the dipstick hole.Otherwise a brilliant bit of kit.

Definitely worth the money and i did not have to stick myself under 1 tonne of car!!!!
Used on my Skoda Fabia and checked the oil later and it was still looking clean so the old oil must have been removed. I used an inline plastic tap which makes it alot easier to use and this was definitely worth the money as it made the oil far easier to change and i did not have to stick myself under 1 tonne of car!!!! Remember to get the oil a little warm first.

Suck it up
Used it...and loved it. Why didn't I get one earlier? Oil change is so simple, quick and a lot less messy. Most importantly I don't have to clamber into my garage pit or spend time unscrewing the engine stoneguard. I'm not going to say its a delight to change the oil but its close now with this little gem. Buy one and you wont be disappointed.
