Betamax the Third [rental]
This movie is a massive step down from V/H/S 2. Still, it isn't entirely badIn the predecessor, all the cameras were "worn" in one way or another. The first segment was almost a mockumentary, which made me think the rest would be. Unfortunately, they weren't nearly as effective.Actually, for the "true tory" portrayal, mockmentaries work better than the more recent type of found footage anyway. The second involved parellel universes or something, and was a bit strange but it was more weird than scary. Then it completes the downward slide with a segment about obnoxious skateboarders and their battle with easily-dispatched zombies. Well, they were probably cultists first, then some weird variety of zombies, or something.Anyway the wraparound is technically its own sement, except its focusing on people turned weird by these videos, so its mostly mini-segments with some storyline about an ice cream van connecting them.

Disappointing, to say the least
Watched this for the Benson/Moorhead segment 'Bonestorm', but that was surprisingly by far and away the worst of the segments. I'm guessing that it was trying to be arch and clever in trying to look like some kind of dumb video game (maybe inspired by the ultra-violent game of the same name referenced in the Simpsons) but any irony was lost in the utterly dumb scripting, hamfisted editing and dodgy CGI. The rest of it wasn't much better either (particularly the overarching 'virus' story which was really deeply uninteresting) - uninvolving, confusing and directionless nonsense with poor acting, barely competent direction and shoddy production values. Makes the first two (which do have their moments) look like major works of art. I have a high tolerance for poor quality horror films and am a forgiving sort, but this left me feeling insulted and a bit dirty. Drivel. Not even worth one star.

well worth a watch if a fan of either VHS or VHS 2 a fitting end if it's the last one
very glad they made this as enjoyed the first two hopefully does well, sticks true to the first two movie premises. All I can say is you will go on a wild ride from the scary, downright bizarre to hilarious over the top blood and guts it starts off a little slow but once the first segment starts and the story begins you will be hooked, the main theme is viral in the title and the ending makes this film seem like it had a bigger budget than it did well the whole film does it exceeds expectations there is a much bigger open flow for the film with ten times the death and mayhem of the previous two combined while still retaining one or two quite interesting segments the magician one in particular but the main story is about how the tapes affects everyone tying in the overall VHS series and ending it in dramatic style. Do not get me wrong some parts of the film felt wrong while others couldn't stop laughing but it works to the films favour as the different directors New when to take the important parts seriously while crowing in all the entertaining carnage I believe the skate boarders video was the weakest one. I recommend you watch VHS 2 or even the first one for any new watchers as you will understand more why this film is different I might say better in terms of story and flow but there have been better written self contained horror segments in the previous 2. For fans by the end I think you will be pleasantly surprised that being number 3 it manages to be bigger and some could say better in terms of filming style and story than the last 2 if this is it I can accept this film as a fitting end of a decent horror anthology series of films.

Nonsensical, 'wannabe V/H/S 3' movie which fails to deliver in any expected way
This final episode in the V/H/S series is, at best, unfounded. Trying to stick with the original format, the production is given a modernisation but, bizarrely, the tracking issues and cutting present in the old medium are still here. The main storyline fails to make any reasonable sense, as do the majority of the shorts, with silly, straw-clasping attempts at found-footage; one of which even has more camera angles than a production-quality film, totally disregarding the medium and making the entire effort seem unbearably forced. If you loved the first 2 films, you will, most likely, be let down by this third installment as I was, but I would still recommend watching it solely to fixate in your mind that the franchise is well and truly dead (or one could only hope so, at least). With an appallingly nonsensical plot, absurdly weird (but not in the sense we have become accustomed to with the previous pair of films) shorts, and a storyline which leaves you wanting an explanation, rather than the feeling of utmost realisation, V/H/S Viral is certainly in my list of disappointments for this year.

Muy buena película
Muy buena película, sigue la tendencia de las dos entregas anteriores, en cuanto al estuche es una simple caja de plástico con su portada. Si eres fan de las películas de este estilo, cien por ciento recomendable.

Unquestionably the best of the series
This is the third interation of the V/H/S series, which has been widely panned by those who write reviews of this type of thing. Whenever I see a film that far exceeds my own expectations, I feel compelled to dispel whatever confusion seems to result in an unwarranted plethora of negative reactions and reviews. The 'Viral' entry is indeed a stand alone barrage, if not an outright assault, of sound and pictorial images, all of which combine to create a nail-biting, edge-of-your seat experience. The people behind this series seemed to have learned as they went along, with each entry, from first to third, being superior to the former one. For example, the special effects in Viral are equal to the best you'll find in all but the most highly budgeted blockbusters. The stories, or vignettes, are at one and the same time, well acted, fascinating, thought-provoking, and scary as hell. There's enough blood and gore to satisfy most horror-genre viewers, but more importantly, the action is both captivating and thrilling. As for the 'found footage' complaints about jerky camera movements, I had no problem following all of the segments, quickly becoming oblivious to them and ultimately enjoying how they lead us along, bridging the different story elements the same as other visuals do the same. Most noteworthy are the story vignettes themselves. Each one has a clear beginning, middle, and conclusion, the only unanswered question being the police chase of a mysterious ice-cream van, throughout the show. For those folks who have seen the first two movies, Viral is a must-have addition, which I almost missed based on the negative reviews. Trust me when I say that the film, whether you love it, or simply find it to be just okay, is worth your time and money that's well spent. As I said earlier, the high quality of this particular movie will not leave you disappointed, other than when you're sorry to see it end. Trust your own instincts that I appear to know what I'm talking about. Then do yourself a favor, buy this film and enjoy it; Viral is one of those rare treats we think of as 'guilty pleasures' or discovered treasures when we find them.
