Poldark - Series 2 [DVD] [2016]

Full disclosure: I am a big fan of this show and its source material, the 12 books by Winston Graham, and I couldn't be more in love with this iteration. Mammoth Screen, the BBC and PBS (in America) have given us a treasure in this show, which is phenomenal in every way. Dramatic, exciting, addictive, this show offers the viewer everything: adventure, romance, compelling characters and the beauty of Cornwall. Heading the list of wonderful actors is Aidan Turner, who is not just a pretty face (although he is that, most assuredly!) but an actor who brings depth and complexity to the titular role of Ross Poldark. Eleanor Tomlinson (Demelza) and Heidi Reed (Elizabeth) perfectly embody the two key women in his life, Kyle Soller does a wonderful job as Ross' cousin, friend and business partner Francis, and Jack Farthing is perfect as the dastardly George Warleggan, Ross' arch-enemy.In this second season, we find Ross in dire straits: he has been set up by his nemesis George Warleggan for inciting a riot and Geroge has taken the extra step of paying off witnesses to speak against Ross in court. On top of this problem, Ross is deep in debt. Through sheer determination, some business sense, a bit of behavior that barely skirts the law and some good luck, Ross manages to survive. But will his relationship with his devoted wife Demelza, survive these traumas? Yes, there are plenty of ups and downs in this second series -- all compelling and engaging and dramatic. This show is like a good novel...you can't put it down!The writing of the show by Debbie Horsfield is superb, the direction is equally so and the production values are top-notch. If you are a fan of this show, then this DVD is a must-have, including not just the 10 complete episodes but some engaging behind-the-scenes bonus features (character examinations, making of, episode commentary of the finale). To me, it's definitely money well spent. Thank you, Mammoth Screen, BBC and PBS for giving us this fantastic show. I'm ready for many more seasons!

We are devoted Winston Graham readers and have some mixed feelings about the subtleties of (especially) Ross and Demelza's relationship and personalities which are extinguished in the modernity of this adaptation. In the books both main characters have a delightful sense of humour and are much gentler with one another. Demelza has a magical connection to people and nature which far surpasses the contemporary strong woman image written for and portrayed by the actress in this series. And Ross is more complex in the books.Yet we do love this series. The setting, music, actors, horses and care that has gone into it's making are all wonderful. And Debbie Horsfield has done a masterful job cramming as much story into these hours as possible.I live in Alaska and finally had to buy a region free DVD player so we could see all the special features and listen to the commentaries on the UK DVDs which are NOT on the US DVDs. We are appreciative of the extras on the UK DVDs and the quality of this drama.Also, if you have read the books, you know that Demelza engineered the first physical encounter with Ross as an attempt to not have to return to her father's home. So when Ross goes off the rails with Elizabeth, it's almost as if to complete something that almost certainly would have happened had Demelza not interrupted Ross's obsession. Not that I'm one bit sorry she did!

Watched both Series 1 and Series 2 on TV when they were aired and had to buy the Series 2 DVD as soon as it was available. A superb series with seriously good acting, enabling the audience to invest time and emotion in the various characters. Highest praise has to go to Aidan Turner as Ross. He has breathed life into a well-loved fictional character and absolutely inhabits him. The chemistry with Eleanor Tomlinson is extraordinary and both actors deserve acting awards and recognition all over the world. A round of applause must also go to all the actors on the show - truly wonderful ensemble piece. Amazing writing once again from Debbie Horsfield ensuring first class drama; fabulous cinematography; amazing directing; Anne Dudley’s stunning and atmospheric music, beautiful costumes and of course the horses - Seamus et.al all well trained and beautiful to look at! Highly recommended!!

I use Music Magpie a lot when purchase new, second hand dvds and they are great. This dvd came almost a week after the latest date it said it would. I do not mind as it was a gift for me I got with a voucher. It came sealed, dvd works. It is the English dvd version and has over an hour of extras on it.

The first series of Poldark was a hard act to follow but this more than lives up to expectations.As ever, the acting throughout is excellent and this,combined with stunning cinematography, atmospheric music & an excellent script, makes for compulsive viewing.The characters are never one-dimensional, they 'live' and you experience their emotional highs and lows with them as you watch the high drama of Series 2.Although it seems unfair to single out one person for their performance, it has to be said that, yet again, Aidan Turner proves, beyond doubt, what a superb actor he is - his nuanced performance is absolutely breathtaking.Definitely, Series 2 is a "Must See."

This follows on from season one and is getting better by the minute. The acting is very good and very believable and you really want to smack George due to his arrogance. I will be buying season three soon and then look forward to the season four. The original series with Robin Ellis & Anghagard Reese was good, but I think this series is better.

Poldark is a fantastic series, with all the drama, the beautiful Cornish landscape, romance and sexyness of the talented main characters. I loved this DVD, I have all the second season together and a very interesting Behind The Scenes footage with interviews and making of, but the best for me is the audio commentary with the cast, so much fun!

This was a complete replacement set as my neighbour has worn ours out!

Good drama

Todo perfecto y visionado correcto. En mi opinión, la mejor temporada de la serie.

On m'a offert la première saison de cette série et j'ai adoré. La deuxième saison était tout aussi bien que la première. Le caractère de Ross montre son côté obscur qui est en juxtaposition avec sa nature généreuse et aimante. Sa femme en souffre terriblement et on ne peut que sympathiser. Elizabeth est toujours aussi belle et toujours aussi indécise et se montre assez manipulatrice même si on l'a soupçonne d'être assez bête - on ne peut pas tout avoir. Demelza garde la tête haute et les idées claires. Mes ados trouvent que rien ne se passe dans Poldark mais je ne peux que les encourager à s'asseoir et apprécier une émission super bien filmée, super bien jouée et pleine de hauts et de bas, dans un monde où la technologie n'a pas de place et les gens survivent simplement.

Incredibile a dirsi, ma questa seconda stagione, che porta sullo schermo il terzo e il quarto libro della saga, è addirittura più imperdibile della già eccellente prima!!! Colpi di scena che si susseguono e personaggi indimenticabili!!! Bravissimi gli attori, mozzafiato le ambientazioni!!!

Nachdem ich von der ersten "Poldark"-Staffel regelrecht begeistert war, wollte ich nicht warten, bis die zweite Staffel auch bei uns in Deutschland erscheint, sondern habe sie mir als UK-Import gekauft (es empfiehlt sich sowieso, die Serie im englischen Original anzuschauen). Wichtig: Um der Handlung der zweiten Staffel folgen zu können, sollte man vorher unbedingt die erste Staffel gesehen haben. Wer also noch nicht in den Genuss dieser wunderbaren Serie gekommen ist, sollte direkt mit der ersten Staffel starten und so viel sei gesagt: es lohnt sich absolut!!!Die erste Staffel endet ja mit einem richtig fiesen Cliffhanger. Ross und Demelza stehen nach dem Verlust ihrer Tochter einander Halt gebend an einer Klippe und sehen über das Meer - also eigentlich eine perfekte Schlussszene. Eigentlich, denn ganz am Ende wird Ross ja abgeführt - und mit diesem fiesen Cliffhanger wurden wir Fans in der Schwebe gelassen.Die erste Folge der zweiten Staffel setzt exakt an dieser Stelle ein, als Ross abgeführt wird, d.h. wir sehen einen gleitenden Übergang von Staffel eins zur Nachfolgestaffel. Und schon ist man wieder mitten im Cornwall des 18. Jahrhunderts und in der Geschichte gefangen. Ich möchte wirklich nicht zu viel verraten, aber die zweite Staffel beginnt wirklich nervenaufreibend, denn Ross steht wegen Meuterei vor Gericht. Sein Erzfeind George möchte ihn unbedingt aus dem Weg schaffen und dafür sind ihm alle Mittel recht; zuerst schwärzt er Ross an und dann kauft er Zeugen, die vor Gericht gegen Ross aussagen. Es sieht sogar so aus, als würde Ross gehängt werden...Ich möchte nicht spoilern, aber in der zweiten Staffel passiert sehr, sehr viel. Einiges stellt auch vieles aus Staffel eins in Frage, manche Charaktere verändern sich total und leider (!!!) müssen wir uns in der zweiten Staffel auch von einigen lieb gewonnenen Charakteren verabschieden. Es liegen Liebe und Leidenschaft, Leid, Intrigen, Machtkämpfe, Betrug und finanzielle Probleme wieder nah beieinander und sorgen für ein Wechselbad der Gefühle. Übrigens lernen wir in Staffel zwei einige neue Charaktere kennen, u.a. die reiche Caroline, die mir wirklich ans Herz gewachsen ist. Und andere Charaktere würde ich am liebsten nicht mehr sehen, z.B. den absolut widerlichen George (den ich am liebsten erwürgen würde!!!) und Elizabeth, die jetzt nach Staffel zwei sämtliche Sympathien verspielt hat. Und auch Ross ist nicht mehr der glänzende Held aus Staffel eins, sondern - naja, ein typischer Mann eben :D (wenn ihr die Staffel gesehen habt dann wisst ihr, was ich damit meine).Achja: Was ich wirklich gut finde ist die Tatsache, dass die zweite Staffel ohne Cliffhanger endet, sondern mit einem mehr oder weniger versöhnlichen Ende. Kein Happy End und es bleibt auch einiges offen (schließlich geht's in der nächsten Staffel weiter), aber man wird nicht so gemein auf die Folter gespannt wie nach Staffel 1.Ich freue mich schon wahnsinnig auf die dritte Staffel, die wohl in GB Ende 2017 ausgestrahlt werden wird, d.h. wir können sie dann vermutlich im Winter nächsten Jahres auf DVD kaufen. Es gibt im Netz bereits einen Trailer zu Staffel 3, der extrem vielversprechend ist. Ach, am liebsten würde ich gleich mit der nächsten Staffel weitermachen :).
