Canon 2421Y85 IXUS 285 Compact Camera with 3 inch LCD Screen - Black

This is my third camera from the IXUS range over many years. It doesn't provide all the features of a more expensive digital SLR but what was wanted was a handy camera that could be carried in a pocket for those quick shots that are often missed and it is perfect. In a waterproof bag it is also ideal for taking pictures while snorkelling as the controls are easily manipulated through the bag.

I initially bought a Sony compact but had to return it as I couldnt synch it with my Samsung tablet. The Ixus is a brilliant thing, really excellent pics from auto, flash, full telephoto. I had no problems linking it or transferring pics wirelessly from the camera to my tab. I am old and non technical but it really was very easy. It slips into the pocket and takes really good pics. A Teriffic buy.

Good photo's and responsiveness, a nice compact camera which fits comfortably in my coat pocket. Shame about the Canon Camera Connect software (I use it on an Android phone), in particular being unable to leave connected to the camera for always-on GPS when using the camera 'normally'.Let down by the Canon connect app in a number of ways as although it works relatively well once connected just for the purposes of remote shooting, has the following unexpected disadvantages:> Doesn't remotely shoot video, which is a real shame as it would be so handy for selfie videos, overhead shots etc. (basically would be useful for the same reasons as it is for regular shooting)> Can't leave the phone and camera connected and use the camera normally which means...- GPS tagging is only available when using the phone itself to trigger the camera (i.e. you can't just have the phone in your pocket/nearby and have it sending GPS location to the camera while you use the camera normally)- If you're doing some shots where a remote screen is useful and some where you want to use the camera as normal in the same session, you have to keep switching between connected and not (and re-connecting is a faff - see below)> Connecting to the app is fiddly. You'll need to be on the lookout for Wi-Fi connection messages in the background on Android (it will let you know that there's no internet connectivity on the phone Wi-Fi connection, which you'll have to click and accept before the camera app connection will continue)

Only had the camera a short while but I like what I have seen so far. I tend to use the automatic setting as it does what I require. I like the zoom facility and from reading the instructions available on line, I can see the potential of the camera and the options it provides if I so wish to use them. I have used the wifi button on the camera to save photos on my laptop and ipad (need to download a free app from the Canon website choosing either Apple or Android app depending on your operating system - I am not very computer literate and I managed the process ok and it makes transferring photos to files on your laptop/ipad relatively simple - you can still transfer the photos by placing the memory card directly into your laptop if you prefer - or use a shop if you prefer to process the memory card.).I bought the CAISON digital camera case for the camera which I can also recommend.

Good camera, but one of the reasons for buying this particular model rather than cheaper ones, was that it had Wifi. Have just wasted half a day, with Canon Technical Support, attempting to get it to link up to my laptop. And still no result. Looking on the internet, I am not the only one with this problem. And, because it doesn't have a USB cable link (why not??!) my options are either to return it, or to get a card reader device - which seems distinctly retrograde. My modem is a few years old, but I have been able to link up a variety of other devices without any difficulty.

Bought for my lady and she loves it, handy and easy to use (much better than a fiddly smartphone). Picture quality is very good and it is so small and can be slipped in a pocket or handbag. quick-on-the-draw 'pull it out' and quick snap, leaves me in second place, with my more expensive camera. Maybe my photos are slightly better quality, but you would have to examine very closely to see the difference. it doesn't overdo the complexities which other cameras 'suffer' from, has plenty versatility, but you don't need all that fancy stuff, this camera cover most of your needs to take a good photo

This small, slim camera is a good choice if you don't want a smartphone because you are happy with an older style mobile phone. The IXUS 285 is well built (I have the purple one, which has a metal body so I don't know if the other models use plastic) and very easy to use. It comes without its connecting cable but you might already have one from one of your other gadgets and I think they are still easy to obtain - USB to mini-B, often supplied with USB hard drives for computers. You can of course remove the SD card and plug it into your computer, perhaps with the aid of an SD card reader. It has wireless communication abilities but I don't find a need for those.Battery life isn't brilliant but is far better than the battery life of a smartphone. The battery takes about two and a half hours to charge and this is done by removing the battery from the camera and placing it in the charger (supplied). The camera doesn't come with an SD card but they are very cheap nowadays, especially from Amazon, so get a couple of high-capacity ones. The photos display better on a computer than on the camera's own screen, and that screen could be scratched quite easily so get yourself a case for the camera.As with all compact cameras, turn off the built-in flash unless you really need it, because pictures look much better with natural subtle shadows. The camera copes quite well with indoor lighting conditions, at least as well as a smartphone.
