The rechargeable battery is installed in the device. You do not need to buy other battery, you only need to connect it to USB port to charge it.

can the beeper be turned off?

Both the clicker for incoming detections and the beeper for threshold/safety exceeded can be turned off. If you do that though, best watch the display closely, as the 3.5 mm socket on the side of it is an analogue data port, not a headphone socket.

How is the time and date set? The 4 front buttons don't appear to access that function??

You can set the date and time from Main menu->Init setup->Date Time menu.

How often it has to be calibrated (by third party specialist) to maintain accuracy?

Digital meters usually do not require further calibration once they leave the factory. The accuracy remains the same unless you physically change something in the settings.
