I bought this for my son to wear during cold, winter soccer games, and it works great! It fits well on a 10-year-old and keeps his head and ears warm in the wind.

This hat would probably work for a child or adult due to the stretch. My 8-year-old son finds it comfortable, and he is fussy, if that tells you anything. It is soft and stretchy. It probably isn't the warmest hat you have ever owned. It is not a super dense material like your typical ski hat, but as a regular day-to-day winter hat, it is warm enough, stylish, and does the job.
