Wow, Speed = ~500 MB/s: Benchmarks suggest this mSATA enclosure is blazing fast
Short Answer:Pros: This device works out of the box with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Linux, it absolutely works at USB3 rates, and it's actually incredibly fast. This enclosure is top of the line for speed and compatibility. I benchmarked USB3 sequential write to an SSD in this enclosure with throughput of about 550 MB/s. (Yes, this is at or near the USB3 theoretical max -- I had LZ4 enabled)Cons: Perhaps a little larger than some other mSATA enclosures; The design is a bit minimal, and the aluminum case is a bit thin.I have confirmed this dirve will operate at USB3 rates (~200-500MB/s) if you plug it into a dedicated USB3 port and use a quality mSATA SSD. I bought this enclosure so I could use an mSATA drive for Virtual Machines, Video, And Music . I wanted to velcro this enclosure to the back of my laptop and plug it into the laptop's USB3 port. I run Linux as my sole OS.I spent alot of time researching the mSATA enclosures availables on Amazon. Many seemed cheap or crappy, and I could find very little info about whether they would actually work at USB3 rates, let alone if they'd work at USB3 speed under linux. I purchased this product from Oyen Digital because it seemed to be the most conservative decision -- the least bad of the available options -- and my goal was something compact that was likely to work at actual USB3 speeds in Linux. The device is stylish in a minimal sort of way. It doesn't feel expensive, but it looks reasonable, and it's perfectly functional. The case is aluminum which I found surprising. The engineering is not perfect, but everything fits and it all works just fine. This device even came with screws and a screwdriver to mount your mSATA SSD inside of it.What you may really want to know is this: how is the performance and compatibility? Performance = Incredible. Compatibility = Great.Far surpasses my modest expectations. The speed of this enclosure with a Crucial m550 over USB actually exceeds the transfer speed of a 2.5" Toshiba Q Series over SATA (in the same laptop). So while this might not be the most fashionable mSATA enclosure, I have no doubt that it's one of the fastest available.Furthermore, it works fine under Linux. It began working 'out-of-the-box' on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. In terms of performance with my drive, the results are as follows....// Reference non-USB Speed: Amount of time to copy a 16GB Virtual Machine from one directory to another on my internal SSDroot@computer:~# time zfs send tank/vm@win7_clean | zfs receive tank/vm/testreal 1m15.150s 218 MB/s (speed of internal Toshiba SSD, no USB involved here)user 0m0.000ssys 0m12.614s# Test: Amount of time to copy a 16GB Virtual Machine over --> USB2 <-- to a SSD in the Oyen Digital Enclosureroot@computer:~# time zfs send tank/vm@win7_clean > /lake/backup/laptop-tank-vm__win7_clean.imgreal 3m10.473s 86 MB/s (speed to copy data out to Oyen Digital enclosure over USB2.1 port)user 0m0.000ssys 0m1.817s# Test: Amount of time to copy a 16GB Virtual Machine over --> USB3 <-- to the Oyen Digital Enclosureroot@computer:~# time zfs send tank/vm@win7_clean > /lake/backup/laptop-tank-vm__win7_clean2.imgreal 0m29.763s 550 MB/s *** Wow!!user 0m0.000ssys 0m1.599sI highly recommend this drive as an external SSD enclosure if USB3 speed is on your list of must-haves. It works great in Linux and it's really fast.

Good build, but slowing down over time. Garbage collection failure?
Edit: SSD performance is degrading over time. I'm not sure this enclosure allows for garbage collection. Speeds are now 60MB/sec tops; 1/2 of the original 100-120MB/sec speed.Taking off 2 stars until further notice.Otherwise, it performs consistently and is still a solidly built case. Not happy with 60MB/sec since my 2.5" platter HDD can go 80MB/sec over the same connection.

Good Value
Good Value but the screws are little tricky and the inside attachment is flimsy.

mSATA external aluminum case
Good price, free shipping. I have not used it yet. I am planning on buying an mSATA SSD for this and start using it in place of a flash drive for my computer. I need that to save my important data (much faster) in case my hard drive fails. It is a sturdy aluminum case.I have not tried the included USB 3 cable but in theory it should work with my computer USB 2 (at USB 2 speed) socket until I build my new computer with USB 3 sockets. It is sturdy and small and comes with a USB 3 cable. Exactly what I wanted. If it fails, I will update this review. Even if it does, I plan on using the case as planned. And for $10 I won't complain much.I need to update this ---- I bought a mSATA card. I works great. Fast. Now I have fast external solid state storage in a nice aluminum case. That was my goal for this. Now I see the price has increased, so I won't buy another case. To expensive. So I amhappy I bought it when I did for $10

This IS a Good Product
Well made and the price is fair. I only wish it came with rubber pads or feet to put on the bottom. I fixed this issue by going to the hardware store and buying little adhesive rubber pads. Worked like a charm. Product is well made.

Inexpensive and convenient, very well made.
Very useful, convenient device. Metal construction seems very sturdy, and the installation of the mSATA drive was easy. It's bigger than a USB flash drive, so depending on the latest flesh drive size (I've seen 512GB sized ones now) and the size of the mSATA SSD you put in this, you may be dealing with a slightly larger device. But if you are trying to re-purpose a replaced mSATA SSD drive from a older laptop/ultrabook, this is the perfect device to use it. Frankly, $18 bucks to use a 512GB mSATA drive that would have just sat on a shelf somewhere (after I replaced it with a larger one) instead of paying $150 - $200 on a brand new USB drive is good for me.

Seems fine otherwise, but I was expecting a more solid ...
Enclosure feels flimsy when assembled, end where cables connect wobbles back and forth. Not an inspiring build quality, despite the metal enclosure pieces, as a result. Seems fine otherwise, but I was expecting a more solid item from Oyen, based on the quality of their other hard drive products I have handled in the past.

Excellent little drive housing - did exactly what I needed it to do.
I purchased this drive housing in hopes it would allow me to access files on my defunct Dell Precision hard drive. I wasn't able to boot my computer any longer as the solid date hard drive wasn't being recognized. A local computer shop offered to download whatever files they could for $80. I purchased this for much and it works perfectly as an external drive. All the files I need are available. It is good quality and I am very pleased with it.

Good, but not great
Edit: I have played around with some settings and now I am getting the speeds that I was expecting. Overall the device looks and feels nice, but I am not happy about how loose the PCB board is in the enclosure. The screws are impossible to tighten with the supplied screwdriver and I may need to invest in some double sided tape.
