Compelling and perfect for anyone working in healthcare
The first portion of the book contains diagnostic criteria for several diseases, how to perform the mental status exam and how to evaluate the results. The end of the book contains handouts you can give patients in the waiting room for self-evaluation and a way to score them. What is sandwiched in between is truly great. Each clinical vignette is very compelling and intensely interesting. At the end of each vignette, you can quiz yourself on the diagnosis and then confirm the answer. What proceeds from there is the DSM criteria for the diagnosis in bold, followed by the parts of the vignette that confirm or deny the presence of each symptom. There is also a brief discussion of the disease, the treatment concerns, differential diagnosis and a note on how the actual patient was handled. Even the laziest medical student can finish this book in 2 days during rotations. If you deal with conscious patients, you will have many patients with psychiatric disorders. This book is far too cheap, easy to read and valuable to pass up.

fun and easy way to learn DSM-5 and ICD-10
Have this on Kindle. Very handy. Storytelling method of cases is engaging and fun. Differential diagnosis is given to the reader rather than laboriously worked out. Author seems somewhat green and brash. Lots of Freudian slips. Fails to consider some other diagnostic possibilities. Written in the first person about his experiences in a psych ER. That having been said, it is entertaining, and puts the reader on a fast track to being able to handle the transition to DSM-5/ICD10 - now dimensional and no longer multi-axial. Good appendices with clinical interview and various diagnostic tools. Emphasizes new diagnoses and updates to old ones.

Mental Status mExam: 52 chhallenging cases
Interesting here & there.I must say though it has some cases that are so miscroscopic that I can't imagine how they got referred to the Psych Dept. There are some things in here that are so miniscule that I have never seen anything remotely close to this in my practice. The diagnoses that were given seemed hasty & with little quick evidence used to make the diagnoses. Most of this book is based on his own thinking using his own copyrighted test theorems.Small amount of footnotes or prior cases.Uses zero recognized work & no resources backing his own tests.I must say his thinking doesn't match anything I have ever been involved in.He appeared to use zero staffing meetings to do his work while most of mine was done within the scope of other professionals input.

A good read
I used this with my interns to get them to think more clinically about situations. They absolutely loved it. It was great to see them not only working through the situations, but also questioning the logic behind the diagnoses and where they may have gone wrong with their own diagnosing skills. It is slightly wordy at points, but overall it's pretty good.

Good book, wish it wasn't DRM
About 8% through on Kindle version. Easy to read and injected with plenty of practical implications; however, I wanted to be able to navigate easily to checklists in the Appendices and have the option of printing them, e.g., with an application like Calibre. I cannot, however, because the book is DRM protected. From what I understand DRM does not prevent piracy but just annoys buyers who want to get the full use out of their digital purchase. Next time, I will limit my search to books/publishers who do not use DRM or I'll borrow the book from our academic library. Cheers.

This book ISP a find!!
Every diagnostician and their students should be required to have this in their office. I would give my students the vignette only and let them explore the DSM 5 before giving them the rest of each chapter. I also found the cases treated in settings other than my own, as well as the permission to use them well worth the price of the book! A great gift for a friend or student no matter how many years they have used the DSM

Great read
It’s is a very good book and guide on understanding the DSM 5 and how each diagnosis applies to different people. This is a good book to use in clinical supervision for hours towards LCSW.

Good definitions and explanation
This is an excellent description of many disorders in DSM 5 which are clearly explained and distinguished from each other. Shading and variations of disorders are set out in a way that is easily understood
