Futurama - Bender's Game [DVD]

I don't get what people aren't finding funny...
The plots of the last three films have become rather ludicrous in comparison to those of the earliest series (1 & 2), but we would only expect more extravagance from feature length films, and needless to say, this is a science fiction show, surely we're not pining for overused sitcom formulae? (I will cite classic episodes such as 'Xmas story', 'Time keeps on slipping', 'Godfellas', 'A pharoah to remember' and 'Teenage Mutant Leela's Hurdles' to demonstrate that Futurama has at no point been entirely believable).I will concede, however, that the fantasy part of the plot is somewhat of a science-fiction stretch in order to include the D & D parody and does feel rather too tacked on being only the last half hour or so of the film. The parody itself is less D & D and more, as others before me have said, the Return of the King. I thoroughly enjoyed it.The laughs, as always, come thick and fast, and I think the writers have worked hard not to pander to mainstream humour and to put in the far more sophisticated lunacy of the Futurama we all know, for example David X Cohen's dubbed 'Fry not remembering how to talk' (in reference to, 'Bender, look, it's that guy you are!' - Ep 306).As a film, it is fantastically (no pun intended) directed, with great use of colour and balance of 2D and 3D, brilliantly acted and a great watch whether or not you find it funny. (N.B, you should find it funny).

Third time's a charmer
Let me say first I agree with the other reviewers, the plot is awful and the middle fantasy bit seems to exist purely to rip off Lord of the Rings. However this is more than made up for by the many hilarious gags. This is without a doubt the funniest film so far and that's not including a lot of the "Dungeons and Dragons" and Sci-Fi references I probably didn't get. This is predominantly a film for the main characters and most of the minor characters that people may have wanted to see don't get a look in. There are a few quite nifty DVD features such as a gizmo to see what some of the characters would look like merged together, a trailer for the next film and a Bender piracy warning. If you liked the first two films then definitely buy this. If you didn't but loved the series then maybe get someone else to buy it for you for Christmas as this is the film that most lives up to the series although the plot may annoy you.

Meh, I enjoyed it... Bender is better than Tom Hanks in Myths and Monsters...
Whats to say? You either like the Futurama take on other peoples plots or you don't. I wasn't keen on Benders Big Score because it seemed overloaded and time travel paradox plots get complicated. The Beast with a Billion Backs was better, more understandable. This one hits the spot for me with the LOTR parody added to the generic Dungeons and Dragon world... albeit Bender's mania makes me think of the TV anti D&D rant "Myths and Monsters"With Leela as a sexy centaur (and Uni acting as an equine dart) whats not to like? As usual the main plot device is a product of Prof Farnsworths fractured mind, but the whole film fits together beautifully in my opinion.Question: what are they going to use for fuel now?

Role players heaven.
For anyone that ever played and older role playing game, with friends and dice and one of them as the game master, this will ring a few bells. In among the normal shenanigans the crew get mixed up in Benders new fascination with what looks like Dungeons and Dragons.Typically offbeat, bizarre and silly as ever, the Planet Express team end up where no reasonable mind should go, and have to deal with it in their usual style, poorly!I won't say any more than that, but it made a lovely addition to my Futurama collection.

Weakest of the Four
The review title says it all; it just doesn't work as well as the others. I think that it suffers from a lack of narrative focus, I mean the first half focuses on fuel problems and just dives straight into a LOTR parody, without much purpose or meaning. The whole thing is just an excuse to do LOTR: Futurama style and it is all just a bit unecessary. Also, it tries to hard to tie into previous episodes.Saying this, it is worth watching but it just doesn't have enough, to quote The Simpsons, zork.

Good family fun
I purchased this for my young son who started watching this with me on Sky he belly laughed his way through a whole afternoon so thought I'd treat him to the feature lenght versions. It may not be everyones cup of hot drink but with no swearing or excessive violence is much better than the dross on commercial telly nowadays!
