The power "button" is always illuminated, even when lamp is off. Is there a way to turn "button" light?

has anyone had trouble with the internal cord assembly being so long that you can't put the two pieces of the lamp together?

Yes - at first it seems the cord was too long. What worked for me is to "force" the cord down into the base. I think the base is designed with room for the excess cord, it just felt like I had to push it a little hard than I was comfortable with.

I know it's 17.72" in height, but is that from the base to the very top of the lamp or to the bottom of the light? What is the length of the lamp?

The 17 inches is from the desk to the natural height of the light when positioned horizontal for reading directly below. If the neck is straight, it's about 22 inches to the lowest edge of the light and about 30 to the highest.

Is this rechargeable/ cordless?

Mine is not. In most cases the pictures and description give you the features of the lamp.
