Textbook with a VERY clear authorial bias
If you are looking for a general textbook covering theatre history that just recites the facts, this is not it. The material here is curated and presented with a very clear argument that theatre history unfolds in relation to print culture and avoids any sort of evolutionary argument. The material unfolds thematically from there and jumps around the globe while doing so. It's not a bad way to go, just different from pretty much every other theatre history textbook. The authors are also very free with their pedagogical opinions, particularly in the introduction, but through the book as well. It's a great text for teaching students about critical reading and watching for author bias because of the heavy hand of the contributors. Again, none of this is wrong, just a departure from how previous textbooks have

Remarkably thorough coverage
Remarkably thorough coverage of the development of the theatre in the west. A little dense, here and there, but an interested reader will not find it difficult. Recommended. dgp
