Alessi Stainless Steel Kettle with Handle and Small Bird-Shaped Whistle, Black

Bought this kettle after hesitating initially because of the price - didn't think I could justify spending so much on a kettle. I have had the kettle for about a month now and not only is it well made & stylish it works like a dream. It heats up extremely quickly on my induction hob and looks just lovely! Just a couple of points to make... at first I thought the whistle wasn't working too well but I hadn't put the lid down fully on the kettle - it fits quite tightly and can be quite difficult to remove when filling. Not a problem for me but thought I would raise this point as it may be a problem for some. Also I bought the 'White Ivory Trim' model and it's worth pointing out that this is actually cream, perfect for my kitchen but if you are wanting a white trim it's definitely not white! That said, I am absolutely thrilled with it - hence the 5 stars.

We just put in some wooden worktops and got fed up of power cables trailing. We used a hob kettle many years ago, so were happy to try again. Chose this one because it did not look too bulky, has a wide botton to catch the gas and heat up quickly and looked nice. In use have found it great. We have had it 4 months or more. We use it many times a day, sometimes just for 1 or 2 cups and it works well even with small amount of water. We live in hard water area, but only use 'filtered' water through charcoal and the kettle shows no signs of limescale due to this. The lid is a little tight on ours, but not a problem. The whistle is also tighter when warm/hot, and sometimes when inserting you have to flex the metal lips of the whistle when you insert it. Whistle work very well when its plugged in properly, otherwise gas escapes without going through whistle - which is same on any whistle kettle. Love it and would not go back to electric kettle.

This is a really stylish kettle and an iconic design. Like other reviews, I had an issue with the bird whistle but Amazon were great in replacing it. The first one I received as a present and the whistle did not work. Amazon were quick to refund my account so I could get another without the gift-giver knowing about it. The second one worked fine. With the first one I think the lid was not sealing properly and the steam was escaping through the lid. Make sure the lid is snapped on firmly - you should hear it click. It is not a loud whistle and I think the level of water in the kettle makes a difference to how loud it is. I find it works best it you don't fill it much above the base of the spout. As to the complaints about it in other reviews - Don't leave it boiling for ages or the whistle will melt. Don't try to remove the whistle while the steam is coming out or you will burn yourself. Do remove the label first - it peels off easily, otherwise it will melt onto the kettle.

As a fan/owner of an original Richard Sapper Classic Alessi 9091 (bought in the 80s) which worked well on gas, but, being copper bottomed, doesn't work at all on our induction hob, I had high hopes for the Alessi Bird. Truth is, after a couple of days use, despite following manufacturer instructions to the letter, the whistle no longer sounds; kettle boils but blows steam all over the hob, and has no auto shut off, so has to be watched very carefully. Verdict: hurts to say it, but nice design, really poor in terms of function.

I've owned this Alessi Kettle in Ivory White for 11 years, and it still looks as good as new. Its elegant and classic design complements various kitchen styles and never goes out of fashion. I rarely write reviews but I thought this needed to be reviewed. My wife wanted this kettle because of its looks. However, good design is not just about looks. In fact on something like a kettle, functionality should be more important than looks. The bird whistle stopper is too tight and the edge of the spout is too sharp so it is difficult to push the whistle in. That tightness makes it difficult to pull it out too, so with two jets of steams shooting out at you I have already been burnt by steam trying to remove the whistle, something that has never happened with the AGA kettle which has a similar whistle but is more practical and less ‘designer’. Due to the strange design of the base of the kettle it takes much longer to boil on an AGA than the AGA kettle does. So for pose value it might meet the criteria, but the designers should be ashamed of themselves at Alessi, good design is NOT just about looks!! P.s To add to this review as I have used the kettle a couple of more times, it is near impossible to pull the whistle out of the spout without it being so firm a pull that boiling water then spills out and if you try to replace the whistle it has expanded sufficiently so it will not go back in the spout. Totally rubbish and I am trying to persuade my wife to send it back!

The first kettle I received did not whistle but it was quickly replaced with another whose whistle is nice and loud I love the look of this kettle, it pours well and feels substantial but not too heavy. To me this kettle is more like a work of art although I think its a bit like marmite - you either love it or hate it. Although this is a pricey kettle it is nothing compared to what my daughter spends on trainers which is how i justify the price to myself!!!!

Looks great but doesn't make a noise when boiling so can't leave kitchen! Expensive purchase which doesn't work so have to replace it!

Ja, sicher, es mag sein, dass der Wasserkocher -wie hier mehrfach bemängelt- "unpraktischer" als andere ist. Aber, hier die gute Nachricht: 1) Der Wasserkessel sieht saugut aus 2) Er macht auf einem Induktionsfeld in Sekunden das Wasser heiß 3) ergo: er tut genau das, wass er soll Im Übrigen: Auch andere Kessel machen Wasser heiß, an dem man sich verbrühen kann. Weder in die Nähe von diesem Kessel oder zu anderen Wasserkessel gehören kleine Kinder. Ich selber habe mir auch an einem (anderen) Wasserkocher die Finger verbrannt - lag aber nicht am Gerät, sondern an mir. Ich würde ihn JEDERZEIT wieder kaufen - das Design ist UNSCHLAGBAR.

Great design at a brilliant price. Take care of plastic fittings getting heat damaged. Had that happen so this is a replacement as I love the design.
