Heather RadkeButts: A Backstory

overhyped and full of bias
I found this booking lacking either humour or reasonable scientific research. At one point scientific opinion is put forth and then casually dismissed in favour of the authors opinion. The first section of the book deals with the evolutionary purpose of the butt which is quite interesting. Very little of the rest of the book is actually about the butt and how people find it attractive in any particular culture. Instead you get a lot of anecdotes and references to fashions that accentuated or diminished the butt all of which the author overstates the same argument of appropriation without much to back it up. The tone is very much of somebody insecure looking for a way to point fingers at body shaming throughout recent history.I can't recommend a book with so much bias and a need for fact checking throughout....

Grande livro
A partir de algo corriqueiro como bundas, Radke reflete sobre antropologia, sexo, apropriação cultural e história. Um livro fascinante, bem fundamentado é fácil de ler.

It's actually a serious discussion of the cultural meaning of derrieres.
Just got started but it's a well written serious discussion of the topic.

It's a Stinker
Other reviewers found humor in this book, but it is grim political cant. The book stars well, describing how human bipedal movement differs from quadrupeds. From that point forward, the book degenerates to recounting exploitation, appropriation, popular culture, and social media trends.Every human has a butt, and butts are secondary sexual characteristics. It would have been refreshing to read about what makes a butt attractive to the opposite sex, and if this is consistent outside the US and UK. Alas, that has to be found elsewhere. The Kindle version has no table of contents.

Great read. Definitely cheeky!
Really enjoyed the balance between research and current cultural relevance. If you like the Malcolm Gladwell/Mary Roach approach which blends journalistic writing with humor and approachability you’ll enjoy this book. It’s a good book to grab for a vacation where you can read in bits or plow through on an international flight!
